In God of War (2018), the Blades of Chaos upgrade to a maximum of level 5 at a Brok or Sindri shop using Chaos Flames. Story progression supplies the earlier flames. To reach level 5, finish the main story, defeat Göndul in Muspelheim, and exchange the Raging Inferno of Muspelheim she drops for the final Chaos Flame at a shop.
Upgrade the Blades of Chaos through level 4
- Continue the main story until Kratos obtains the Blades of Chaos.
- As you progress, collect the Chaos Flames dropped during the story. Visit a Brok or Sindri shop and select the Blades of Chaos upgrade when you have a flame.
- Repeat when additional story Chaos Flames become available. The blades can be upgraded to level 5, but the final level requires a separate Muspelheim item and shop exchange.
The earlier Chaos Flames are story rewards and are not missable. If you think you missed one, check the shop’s Lost Items section.

Get the final Chaos Flame for level 5
- Finish the main story. The final exchange and upgrade are gated behind story completion.
- Unlock Muspelheim. Find four Muspelheim language cipher chests.
- Reach the summit. Clear the Muspelheim trials to reach the Valkyrie Göndul.
- Defeat Göndul. Collect the Raging Inferno of Muspelheim she leaves behind.
- Trade the Inferno at a shop. At a Brok or Sindri shop, open the resources section and exchange the Raging Inferno of Muspelheim for a Chaos Flame. Göndul drops the Inferno, not the final Chaos Flame itself.
- Apply the flame. Open the Blades of Chaos upgrade menu and use the Chaos Flame to raise the blades to level 5.
If an upgrade or item is missing
- A story Chaos Flame is missing: Check the shop’s Lost Items section for a missed boss drop.
- Göndul is defeated, but you do not have the final flame: Check your resources for the Raging Inferno of Muspelheim, then exchange it at a shop.
- The level 5 upgrade is unavailable: Make sure the main story is complete and that you have exchanged the Inferno for a Chaos Flame.
