If The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) crashes or will not open, start by identifying where it fails: before the launcher appears, after you click Play, while loading into a world, or with an error such as 201. Try the matching, reversible checks first; none is a guaranteed fix, and older support instructions may not match current Windows or launcher versions.
Start with the failure stage
- Launcher will not start or shows “Internal Error”: check for service downtime before changing files or settings.
- Nothing happens after clicking “Play,” or the game crashes just after world selection: test display settings, rendering mode, saved settings, and—if appropriate—runtime components.
- “Game error [201]: Can’t open the data files”: check whether game files are missing or inaccessible.
- Connection trouble after a patch: verify the game’s firewall exceptions.
Use the narrowest fix that matches what you see. Prefer reversible tests before reinstalling or changing system-level settings.
8 LOTRO fixes to try, matched to the symptom
1. Check for maintenance before troubleshooting an “Internal Error”
When the launcher reports “Internal Error,” first check LOTRO’s official site and forums for scheduled maintenance. If the service pages still fail outside a maintenance window, Standing Stone Games (SSG) notes that an old hosts-file workaround may be involved. Do not edit the hosts file based on a guess: confirm the issue is local and follow current official LOTRO forum or support guidance.
2. Reset display settings if the game stopped launching after a graphics change
If the problem began after changing graphics options or enabling DirectX 10/11, open the launcher’s Options, select Repair, and choose Reset game display settings. Then try launching with the default rendering choice. Launcher labels can vary by version; SSG documents the reset in its DirectX 10/11 graphics instructions.

3. Compare the default renderer with DirectX 10/11
If LOTRO crashes after clicking Play, choose No if prompted to enable DirectX 10/11, then test the default rendering mode. This is a diagnostic comparison, not evidence that DirectX 10/11 is generally unstable. SSG’s separate graphics-mode article describes requirements for the advanced modes.
4. Rename the LOTRO settings folder after a system or driver change
If the crash followed a Windows update, graphics-driver update, hardware change, or a long break from the game, close LOTRO and rename the The Lord of the Rings Online folder inside Documents—for example, to OLD The Lord of the Rings Online. Launch the game so it can create fresh settings. Keep the renamed folder rather than deleting it; restoring its original name can bring back your previous settings if the test does not help. 5. Check runtime components only for an immediate post-Play crash
When the launcher works but the game crashes immediately after Play, missing runtime components may be relevant. SSG’s older crash-after-Play guidance mentions the Visual C++ x86 redistributable and Microsoft’s DirectX web update tool. Use current installers hosted by Microsoft for Visual C++ Redistributable and consult Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance. Do not reinstall runtimes indiscriminately when the game fails at a different stage.
6. Do not assume a newer DirectX includes every legacy game component
A PC having a newer DirectX version does not by itself establish that every older component a game needs is present. SSG says LOTRO can require specific DirectX 9 files; Microsoft also explains that some games need legacy DirectX components even when a newer version is installed. On Windows 10 or 11, use Windows Update for the latest DirectX version and follow Microsoft’s current DirectX guidance for legacy components. 7. Check installation files and access for error 201
SSG says “The 201 error indicates that the game cannot gain access to or find its ‘dat’ or data files.” Missing files, an incomplete patch, or an access problem can therefore be relevant; the error does not automatically mean the PC needs new hardware. Use the repair option in the current launcher or follow the official reinstall route if files are missing. The SSG error 201 article dates to 2017 and includes Windows-specific advice that may not apply to modern PCs; avoid copying old User Account Control or compatibility-mode steps literally.
8. Refresh a specific firewall exception after a patch
A patch can change an executable enough that a prior firewall exception no longer applies. SSG identifies LOTROLauncher.exe, LOTROInvoker.exe, and lotroclient.exe in its firewall guidance. If connection trouble began after a patch, verify the installed file paths and allow only the relevant LOTRO programs through the firewall. Do not disable firewall protection.

If the quick checks do not resolve it
Note the exact error text and the point at which LOTRO fails, along with any recent patch, graphics-setting change, Windows update, driver update, or hardware change. Then use SSG’s Technical Support resources and support contact instructions. For a fresh installation, use the current official download route rather than relying on old installation media; SSG’s system requirements page was updated on August 20, 2021, so check its current availability and instructions directly.
