Neither is universally better. The two-handed claymore is the historically Scottish choice; the Zweihänder is the better fit for the specialized sword associated with Swiss and German Landsknecht forces. Which one is “better” depends on whether you mean historical identity, a particular sword’s dimensions, its hilt, or its historical context.
First, what does “claymore” mean?
This comparison uses “claymore” to mean the two-handed Scottish Highland sword. The word is ambiguous: The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that it also came to refer to the Scottish basket-hilted sword from at least the 18th century onward. Those are different forms, so it is worth specifying which one you mean. The Met’s collection entry and the Fitzwilliam Museum’s description document the two-handed form.
How do their histories differ?
Two-handed claymore
The Fitzwilliam describes the two-handed sword as a cutting weapon used in the Scottish Highlands and by Scottish mercenaries in Ireland between the early 16th and 17th centuries. Its collection note places the type in Scotland from the 15th to 17th centuries. That makes the claymore the clearer choice if the question is which sword has a specifically Scottish historical identity. Fitzwilliam Museum
Zweihänder
The Styrian Armoury describes the Zweihänder as the largest form of sword and says it developed into a specialized cutting weapon in the second half of the 16th century. It particularly associates Zweihänder-armed mercenaries with Swiss and German Landsknecht armies. The museum says these swords became unsuitable for close melee and shifted toward ceremonial and guard use in the second half of that century; that is the museum’s account of the change, not a rule that applies identically to every sword or use. What are the differences in design?
There is no single specification that covers every sword called a claymore or Zweihänder. Museum descriptions of particular examples illustrate some differences:
| Feature | Two-handed claymore | Zweihänder |
|---|---|---|
| Hilt | The Fitzwilliam’s example has quillons angled toward the blade and ending in quatrefoils, with metal tongues running down either side of the blade. Fitzwilliam Museum | The Styrian Armoury describes a long handle and straight crossguard. Styrian Armoury |
| Blade | Scottish two-handed blades are generally described as broad and double-edged, suited to cutting as well as thrusting. American Society of Arms Collectors article | The Styrian Armoury says the undulating edge served decoration rather than a functional purpose. Styrian Armoury |
Which is bigger or heavier?
Available figures do not support a fair, general ranking of all claymores against all Zweihänders. The Met’s 16th–17th-century claymore measures 136 cm overall and weighs 2,068.5 g; those are measurements of that individual object, not an average for the type. The Met object record

Scottish two-handed swords themselves varied. An American Society of Arms Collectors article distinguishes several types, describing Lowland examples as the largest and heaviest, while West Highland and Clamshell types are smaller and lighter, usually 4–4.5 feet long. The page identifies the reprint as Bulletin 120 but does not establish the original publication year. American Society of Arms Collectors article
So, if “bigger” means a documented individual, the Met’s claymore provides one specific measurement. It does not establish that claymores as a class are larger or smaller than Zweihänders.

Which should you choose?
- For Scottish historical identity: choose the two-handed claymore.
- For Swiss or German Landsknecht associations: choose the Zweihänder.
- For a design comparison: compare specific objects, since hilt and blade features vary.
- For size or weight: compare measurements of individual swords rather than relying on the names alone.
Historical context is more firmly established than a blanket claim about which would be more effective in a fight. The available sources do not provide like-for-like performance testing, and the Zweihänder’s name or size alone does not prove that it was universally superior.
