Cross-play is time-sensitive: as of October 8, 2026, EA had announced a rollout for October 15 in most regions and October 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. The original Nintendo Switch is excluded from that announced cross-play group.

How to set up the Friend’s Pass
- The invited player downloads the pass. Search the player’s platform store for “It Takes Two Friend’s Pass.” EA lists Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam Store, and the EA app. The Steam and Nintendo listings describe the pass as a free download: EA’s Friend’s Pass instructions, Steam, and Nintendo eShop.
- The full-game owner launches the game. Open It Takes Two and send the friend an invitation from the main menu. EA gives the same basic instruction for Switch: EA’s Switch instructions.
- Both players join the session. For PlayStation online co-op, the players must be online together. The owner hosts their game and can invite one friend at a time, according to PlayStation’s FAQ.
- Start the first chapter or continue the full game. If neither player owns the full game, Friend’s Pass provides access to the opening chapter as a trial. To play beyond it, one player must own the full game.
The invited player does not need to buy a second full copy. The pass gives that player access to the owner’s session; it does not replace the owner’s copy for the rest of the adventure.
Do both players need to buy It Takes Two?
No. One player can own the full game and invite a friend using Friend’s Pass. If neither player owns it, both can use the pass to try the first chapter, but a full-game owner is required to proceed through the rest of the game. Check that the owner’s edition and the invited player’s pass are for compatible platforms.

Can Friend’s Pass play cross-platform?
EA announced that cross-play would roll out with the Nintendo Switch 2 release on October 15, 2026, in most regions; the announced date is October 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. The platforms EA lists for cross-play are Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PS5. EA’s announcement excludes the original Nintendo Switch: EA’s September 9, 2026 announcement.
Because this information was checked on October 8, 2026, those dates were still in the future at that point. For play on or after the announced dates, check EA’s current support information for rollout and regional availability rather than assuming the feature became available everywhere at once.

Original Nintendo Switch
The original Switch is not part of EA’s announced cross-play group. EA describes play between two original Switch users, local GameShare with a Switch 2 user, and online play with Switch 2 after upgrading to the Switch 2 edition. Those are separate paths from the announced cross-platform rollout; confirm the edition and current instructions before setting up a mixed-generation session.
PlayStation generations
PlayStation’s FAQ says PS4 and PS5 players can play together, but its no-cross-platform statement may predate EA’s October 2026 announcement. Use PlayStation’s page for its PS4/PS5 and account details, and EA’s dated announcement for the newer cross-play timeline.

Local co-op and online co-op have different requirements
