Spoilers for the ending of the original Life Is Strange. Yes. Near the beginning of Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, Safi asks Max about her past, and you choose which ending of the original game applies to this playthrough. The game does not declare one ending the sole canon: narrative director Felice Kuan said both are canon, and the choice establishes Max’s history in Double Exposure.
What happened to Chloe in each original ending?
The choice refers to the final decision in the original Life Is Strange. Max either saves Chloe and allows Arcadia Bay to be destroyed, or saves the town at the cost of Chloe’s life.

Kuan described the approach as allowing players to choose which original ending they want to use for their Double Exposure playthrough. In other words, the game accommodates both outcomes rather than retroactively making one the only valid continuity.
How does the choice fit into Double Exposure’s story?
Square Enix’s premise places Max at Caledon University, where she is photographer-in-residence. After her friend Safi is found murdered in the snow, Max tries to rewind time but instead opens a parallel timeline in which Safi is alive and still in danger. Max can move between the two realities and investigate the murder in both.

The Chloe question is a choice about Max’s past, while Safi’s murder and the parallel timelines drive Double Exposure’s new plot. The game was announced for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a Nintendo Switch release following; Square Enix listed November 20, 2024, for Switch and October 30, 2024, for the initially announced platforms. Later official context connects Chloe’s story to what happens after Double Exposure. In its announcement for Life Is Strange: Reunion, Deck Nine said Chloe arrives at Caledon as a repercussion of Max merging timelines at the end of Double Exposure. The announcement gave Reunion’s release date as March 26, 2026. This later development does not mean Double Exposure erased the player’s original choice; it describes a consequence of the events at the end of Double Exposure. Deck Nine’s announcement is the source for that connection.
