Life is Strange: Reunion brings Max Caulfield and Chloe Price back together for a full-length adventure built around a campus fire, a shifting mystery and two contrasting abilities. Deck Nine calls it “the emotional conclusion to the Max and Chloe saga,” but that promise is not universally persuasive: TechRadar’s PC review objected to the game’s treatment of continuity and its mystery’s pacing. Whether the return works for you depends in large part on how much you value these characters—and how you feel about the earlier story’s consequences being revisited.
Where Reunion begins—and what it promises
Deck Nine developed Life is Strange: Reunion, with Square Enix as publisher. Max returns to Caledon University after a weekend away to discover the campus engulfed in flames. The inferno kills friends, students and faculty, and the story brings Chloe back into Max’s life as they confront what happened.
Deck Nine’s January 20, 2026 announcement described the game as “the emotional conclusion to the Max and Chloe saga.” That is the developer’s framing, not a settled critical verdict. The official English-language release date was March 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Square Enix Japan listed March 27, 2026 for Japan.
Do you need to play the earlier games first?
For the story’s emotional stakes, yes—especially the first Life is Strange. Reunion directly acknowledges the original game’s ending and the consequences of Max’s decision. Xbox Wire says a major reunion scene changes according to whether Chloe survived and whether Max and Chloe were romantically involved. Those details are meaningful context, not incidental references.

If you have not played the earlier games, you can still follow the basic setup—Max returns to a burning campus and reunites with Chloe—but you will have less context for the relationship and the weight of that scene. The available official account confirms these specific effects of prior choices; it does not establish every save-import option or how every earlier decision carries over. Don’t assume that all previous choices transfer in a comprehensive way.
How the two protagonists play
Max: Rewind changes conversations and situations
Max’s Rewind lets her undo and redo decisions, alter conversations and manipulate parts of the environment. The official description presents her scenes as a chance to test the limits of that power. Its central appeal is the familiar Life is Strange tension between acting on a choice and seeing what changes when you take it back.

Chloe: Backtalk and guile
Chloe’s scenes lean on Backtalk, sharp dialogue and guile rather than Max’s time-reversing ability. Xbox Wire’s hands-on account also describes Chloe grappling with nightmares and impossible memories. The contrast gives the adventure two distinct approaches to conversations and problems.
When they reunite
The game alternates between scenes focused on each woman, then lets players make choices for both when they are together. Xbox Wire says dialogue choices pass between Max and Chloe in these shared scenes. That setup creates structural variety, though it does not by itself resolve whether their reunion feels earned as a continuation of earlier events.

Does the story earn its treatment of the past?
This is the most contested part of the game’s appeal. The returning relationship and the explicit acknowledgement of the first game’s ending give Reunion a clear emotional foundation for fans. But revisiting an established ending also raises the bar: the new story has to make its treatment of that history feel credible rather than convenient.
TechRadar’s March 30, 2026 review of the PC version criticized the game’s retconning and questioned whether the story works as a true sequel. It also suggested that Chloe’s return may be the main attraction for some fans. That is one publication’s judgment, not evidence of a critical consensus, but it identifies a real decision point for prospective players: if continuity is central to what you want from a sequel, this review raises a substantial concern.
Is the fire mystery compelling?
The campus inferno supplies the immediate crisis, but the mystery’s success depends on how well the story paces its questions and revelations. TechRadar found the mystery poorly paced, another criticism tied to its broader doubts about the sequel’s storytelling. The available review evidence does not support a claim about a universally accepted payoff, so the fairest expectation is a character-led mystery whose pacing has drawn at least one sharply negative assessment.

The cited review covered PC, but the available evidence does not establish comparative frame rates, resolution or performance across PC and consoles. It also does not provide a basis for a platform-by-platform performance verdict. Check the store listing for the version you plan to play rather than assuming feature or performance parity.
