Leyndell, Royal Capital is a major legacy dungeon on the Altus Plateau, beneath the Erdtree. For the main story, travel from Capital Rampart through the city to Erdtree Sanctuary, then reach Morgott. Before defeating Maliketh, collect the Bolt of Gransax: Leyndell changes into Ashen Capital afterward, making that weapon unavailable for the rest of the playthrough. The sewers and Mohg, the Omen are optional.
How to reach Leyndell and follow the main route
Leyndell stands at the foot of the Erdtree, east of the Altus Plateau. Gideon Ofnir’s in-game direction is to “Journey to the capital Leyndell, to the east of the Altus Plateau, at the foot of the Erdtree.” The city is large, and the route below is a practical progression path rather than the only way to explore it.
- Enter at Capital Rampart. The route guide lists a Draconic Tree Sentinel at the entrance. Defeating this encounter opens the way into the capital.
- Move through the outer wall. The route passes the graces Outer Wall Phantom Tree and Outer Wall Battleground.
- Collect the Bolt of Gransax before leaving the area for the endgame. Its location and the time-sensitive warning are explained below.
- Reach Erdtree Sanctuary. This is a key point on the route toward the upper capital and the story confrontation with Morgott.
- Continue toward Morgott. The route guide lists Avenue Balcony and Queen’s Bedchamber among the useful graces on the way.
- Defeat Morgott, the Omen King to advance the main story. Explore the sewers before or after this as desired; they do not gate the main progression.
The route guide recommends level 80–110 as its own editorial guidance, not as an official requirement. Your build and experience can make the route manageable outside that range.
Get the Bolt of Gransax before Maliketh
The Bolt of Gransax is the capital’s crucial missable item. It rests on a giant spear shaft embedded in the dragon corpse near the Elden Throne. From the Erdtree Sanctuary area, climb toward the corpse and the spear to reach it.

#1 Best Overall
- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition contains the Elden Ring Base Game + Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion + Additional Content (including Torrent Skins, New Armors, and More...)
- MASSIVE OPEN WORLD
- DEEP, CUSTOMIZABLE COMBAT
- NEW STARTING CLASSES
- NEW PLAYER-FRIENDLY ENHANCEMENTS
Pick it up before defeating Maliketh. After that boss, the world state changes and Leyndell becomes Ashen Capital; the Bolt of Gransax is no longer obtainable in that playthrough. The route guide identifies it as one of the nine Legendary Armaments and the only one that can be permanently lost this way. If you are collecting achievements or completing a Legendary Armaments set, make this your priority before proceeding to Maliketh.
Royal Capital and Ashen Capital are different world states
Leyndell in its Royal Capital state is not the same explorable location as the later Ashen Capital. Defeating Maliketh triggers the change, and some Royal Capital content disappears. In particular, the Bolt of Gransax and an NPC invasion event described by the route guide as added in App Ver. 1.17 will no longer occur after the city becomes Ashen Capital. The guide passage does not identify the invader, so this walkthrough does not assign the event a name.

- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition
| World state | What to know |
|---|---|
| Royal Capital | The main Leyndell route toward Erdtree Sanctuary and Morgott; collect the Bolt of Gransax here. |
| Ashen Capital | Reached after defeating Maliketh; some Royal Capital content is no longer available, including the Bolt of Gransax. |
Optional route: the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds
The sewers are optional for the main story, but they contain worthwhile exploration and a separate boss. The route guide lists Underground Roadside and Subterranean Shunning-Grounds as graces in this area.
- Mohg, the Omen: an optional sewer boss; defeating him does not gate main-story progression.
- Mohg’s Shackle: an item found in the sewers, useful in the encounter with Mohg. The sewer route is also associated with the Frenzied Flame ending.
- Golden Seed: another item the route guide notes in the sewer area.
If you want to keep the main route focused, you can leave this area for later. If you want the sewer items or to pursue the Frenzied Flame path, use the Underground Roadside and Subterranean Shunning-Grounds graces to orient your exploration.

Key graces and boss distinctions
The route guide names these graces across the capital and nearby content:
- Capital Rampart
- Outer Wall Phantom Tree
- Outer Wall Battleground
- Erdtree Sanctuary
- Avenue Balcony
- Queen’s Bedchamber
- Underground Roadside
- Subterranean Shunning-Grounds
- Divine Bridge
Divine Bridge is described as reachable from the Forbidden Lands, so it is not necessary to treat it as part of the direct route through the city. Keep the encounter lists distinct: Draconic Tree Sentinel guards the approach, Morgott is the Royal Capital’s main story boss, and Mohg, the Omen is optional content in the sewers. Godfrey’s Golden Shade belongs to the Ashen Capital version, not the Royal Capital encounter roster.
