It’s Time to Admit Resident Evil 6 Is Great—With a Friend

Resident Evil 6’s messy, over-the-top campaigns make a stronger case as co-op action than as survival horror—and they’re best experienced with a friend.

Resident Evil 6 is a messy fit for survival horror, but a terrific fit for bombastic co-op action. Its four campaigns, shifting tones and over-the-top set pieces can feel exhausting alone; played with a friend, that excess becomes the point. It is not great because it is polished. It is great because it commits to a kind of chaotic spectacle few games attempt.

What kind of game is Resident Evil 6?

Capcom released Resident Evil 6 in 2012, launching on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 2 in North America and Europe; the PC release followed later. The company described a game built around seven main characters and four interlocking stories, including the meeting of Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield. That scale is the key to understanding its appeal—and its problems. Capcom’s 2012 release announcement framed it as a sprawling ensemble rather than one tightly focused horror campaign.

The campaigns shift their emphasis and tone. Leon’s story is the closest to traditional survival horror, while the others lean further into action. That variety gives the game an anthology-like rhythm: it keeps changing what kind of Resident Evil story it wants to tell. It also makes the whole adventure less cohesive than a single, carefully sustained campaign.

Why co-op changes the experience

Campaign co-op is not an afterthought bolted onto a solo game. Capcom’s later PS4 and Xbox One edition supported two-player play throughout each campaign, online or split-screen, with certain online crossover sections allowing as many as four player-controlled allies. The 2016 console release notice also says those versions included console DLC multiplayer and Mercenaries modes.

That shared structure matters because the game repeatedly asks players to act together: cross gaps, solve puzzles and help a partner under attack. In a solo run, a sudden interruption or spectacular sequence can feel like the game is taking control away. With another person, the same moment can become a shared scramble—one player dealing with the threat while the other tries to keep up, recover or make sense of the scene.

Robert Zak’s 2026 PC Gamer retrospective makes this case directly: the campaign’s drop-in multiplayer and split-screen design reward revisiting it with a friend. That is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict, but it points to the game’s best audience. Co-op does not fix every awkward encounter; it gives the awkwardness company.

Its variety is also its appeal

The four stories do not settle into one mood or one kind of action. Instead, they make Resident Evil 6 feel like a huge, unruly tour through the series’ characters and styles. If you want one consistent atmosphere and a focused arc, those shifts can be a liability. If you enjoy the sense that the game is always throwing a new situation at you, they are part of the attraction.

The set pieces embody that trade-off. Tim Turi, reviewing for Game Informer in 2012, praised what he called “the sheer wealth of satisfying gameplay and insane set pieces,” and described the experience as an “unhinged, flaming rollercoaster ride.” Those lines were quoted in Game Developer’s October 3, 2012 review roundup. They capture a real strength: the game is so determined to escalate that it can be exciting simply to see what it will attempt next. The same determination can make it feel overstuffed, but spectacle is not a side effect here; it is a central ingredient.

What the criticism gets right

The game’s reputation did not sour for no reason. Kevin VanOrd’s GameSpot review described Leon’s campaign as the most traditional, but criticized cutscene interruptions, quick-time events (QTEs), slow movement and scripted failures that can make sequences frustrating. VanOrd’s sharpest summary was: “This is a wannabe action film that resents your interference, and punishes you by forcing one horrible quick-time event after another upon you.” That is a critical opinion, but it identifies the collision at the center of the game: it wants to be cinematic while still asking you to play through frequent interruptions.

The action emphasis also weakens the survival-horror atmosphere many players expect from the series. Frequent set pieces and shifts in control leave less room for sustained exploration and player-directed tension. Shooting, pacing and campaign cohesion drew criticism in 2012, even as other reviewers praised the sheer volume of content and the co-op. Game Developer reported a 67/100 Metacritic score at the time of its roundup; that is a publication-date snapshot, not a current aggregate or a final measure of the game’s value.

Those complaints should shape the recommendation, not be waved away. If you want restrained horror, consistent pacing or a tightly unified campaign, this may not be the Resident Evil you are looking for. If you are open to bombastic action, tonal absurdity and co-op chaos, its rough edges can become part of the spectacle.

Who should revisit it?

Revisit Resident Evil 6 if you can bring a friend and want a long, wildly varied action campaign that is happy to lurch from one oversized set piece to another. The game’s four stories and cooperative structure give it a distinctive identity, even when the shifts make it uneven. Solo players can still enjoy the spectacle, but the strongest case for the game is its shared campaign—not a return to the series’ most controlled survival horror.
