Kirby Air Riders is a Nintendo Switch 2 game. Nintendo says riders have individual stats and a Special ability, and that rider-machine combinations handle differently and have their own stats and Specials. A machine’s ranking therefore is not the whole setup: choose a rider and machine combination that suits your handling preferences and the mode.

A strong all-around pick if you can make use of airtime: Gamerch describes Jet Star as gaining speed after airborne moments. That makes it especially appealing on courses where jumps or other airborne opportunities let you build momentum. Its top-tier placement is Gamerch’s assessment, not a guarantee that it leads on every course.

For a useful point of comparison outside that tier, Nintendo Life describes Formula Star as fast in a straight line but less suited to cornering. That tradeoff illustrates why a top-speed impression alone is not enough to choose a machine for every track.

Gamerch includes Battle Chariot in City Trial’s top tier. That makes it one of the guide’s strongest City Trial recommendations, but the cited material does not supply controlled measurements or a detailed comparison with every other machine.

Jet Star also earns a top-tier placement in Gamerch’s City Trial list. Its airborne speed gain is a concrete reason to try it when you can create opportunities to leave the ground, though Air Ride’s course-focused ranking should not be assumed to transfer unchanged.

Its cornering strength gives Wheelie Scooter a place among the City Trial top-tier picks as well. It is a reasonable choice if you value turning control over a machine’s specialized boost or straight-line speed profile.

Ruins Star
Gamerch places Ruins Star in City Trial’s top tier, as it does in Air Ride. The overlap supports testing it across both modes, while leaving room for mode-specific preferences and rider-machine combinations.
Why the rankings differ by mode
Air Ride is organized around racing courses, where speed, acceleration, boost timing, turning, grip, and flight can matter differently from one route to another. City Trial is a separate mode, and Gamerch’s different top-tier selections—including Battle Chariot for City Trial and Chariot and Rocket Star for Air Ride—are a reason not to flatten both into one list.
When comparing machines yourself, consider the specific tradeoff you need: top speed, acceleration and boost behavior, handling and grip, flight or glide, durability, and any distinctive attack or utility. The sources do not offer a common lab-style test across those categories, so these factors are a decision framework rather than measured scores.

Nintendo Life’s guide reported over 28 machines, including four legendary machines, when it was published on November 24, 2025. That is a dated guide tally, not a verified current roster total. The same guide notes that availability and unlock conditions differ by mode, so a machine that is not immediately available may require mode-specific progress.
Check the game version before treating a tier as current
Machine balance can change. Nintendo Support’s update history documents balance adjustments affecting multiple machines, including Jet Star, Swerve Star, and Turbo Star. The recommendations here use Gamerch’s guide updated February 2, 2026, and should be read as a dated editorial reference rather than a claim about every later game version. Check the in-game version and Nintendo’s Kirby Air Riders update history for subsequent changes.
Design context: machines are central to the story
In a Nintendo UK development interview published April 13, 2026, director Masahiro Sakurai said: “For this story, I made it about the machines themselves, not the characters.” That is useful context for the game’s emphasis on machines, but it is not evidence that any machine performs better than another.
