No. The familiar Game Boy Tetris A-Type melody is Korobeiniki, a 19th-century Russian folk song—not music from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. The mix-up has a real source: a different Tetris release, the NES version, used the ballet’s “Sugar Plum Fairy” as a theme.
What is the familiar Tetris song?
The best-known Game Boy Tetris A-Type melody is Korobeiniki. The Strong National Museum of Play identifies the music with that Russian folksong and describes the song as a 19th-century piece about a peddler courting a young woman. The Strong National Museum of Play explains the Tetris theme’s origins.
Why do people connect Tetris with The Nutcracker?
The Nutcracker connection comes from another game: a 2013 paper in the SBGames proceedings reports that the NES version of Tetris used “Sugar Plum Fairy,” from Tchaikovsky’s ballet, as a first theme. That is a separate musical choice from the familiar Game Boy A-Type melody. The SBGames paper describes music used in the NES version.
Which Tetris music do you mean?
“The Tetris song” can refer to music from different releases, not one universal track. For clarity, specify the version and theme: the familiar Game Boy A-Type tune is Korobeiniki, while the cited account of the NES version identifies “Sugar Plum Fairy” as one of its themes.
