The Kurast Undercity is a timed, multi-stage dungeon in Diablo IV’s Nahantu region. Build Attunement by defeating enemies and completing events, kill Afflicted demons to recover time, then defeat the district boss before the run expires. Tributes let you steer rewards toward a category, while optional Bargains trade displayed resources for specified loot changes. Access requires Vessel of Hatred; the exact unlock level and steps differ between current guides, so follow the Priority Quest shown in your own game.
What the Kurast Undercity is
Blizzard describes the Undercity as a multi-stage, time-attack dungeon intended for progression and targeted rewards. In current guides, a run proceeds through three floors and ends at a district boss; the timer stops once you enter the boss room. The core trade-off is time versus Attunement: move quickly enough to reach the boss, but clear useful enemies and events along the way to improve the reward quality. How to unlock the Undercity
You need the Vessel of Hatred expansion for access. Published guides disagree on the required level and the exact unlock sequence: Wowhead’s Season 12 guide says to complete the campaign quest Reunion, reach level 15, and finish the Kurast Undercity Priority Quest chain; Icy Veins’ Season 15 guide gives level 20 and describes a Spirit Flame route. Those instructions are version-specific, and the available sources do not establish one universally current threshold.
- Open your quest journal and check the available Priority Quests after progressing through the expansion campaign.
- Follow the Kurast Undercity quest objectives shown in your game rather than relying on an older guide’s level or route.
- When unlocked, travel to the Undercity entrance in eastern Upper Kurast.
For reference, compare the dated Wowhead Season 12 instructions with the Icy Veins Season 15 instructions; if they differ from your quest journal, use the in-game objectives.

How a timed run works
Build Attunement while moving through the floors
Killing monsters and completing events build Attunement. Higher Attunement improves the quality of loot awarded after defeating the Undercity boss, according to Blizzard’s description. Spirit Beacons summon tethered enemies; completing them grants Attunement and a spirit buff, according to Wowhead. Beacons and elites can be efficient targets, but the best route depends on how quickly your character can clear them.
Use Afflicted enemies to regain time
Defeating Afflicted demons extends the timer. Their value is practical rather than automatic: detour for one when the time gained is worth the distance and combat required. Specific time increments in older guides can change with patches, so check the current in-game display rather than treating a published number as permanent.

Reach the boss and meet the run’s Attunement requirement
The boss room is the endpoint, and the timer stops there. Icy Veins’ Season 15 guide says Rank 1 Attunement is the minimum for a successful run; precise rank behavior can change, so use the current run UI as the authority. If time is tight, prioritize the route to the boss over optional fights that are unlikely to improve your result.
Choosing a Tribute and Bargain
Tributes: choose a reward direction
Tributes augment a run to target a reward category, and higher-quality Tributes increase the challenge, according to Blizzard. The August 2026 D4 Forge guide lists categories including gear, class uniques, Masterworking materials, boss-summoning materials, runes, talismans, and experience. Treat that as a guide to possible targets, not a guaranteed or exhaustive list: check the Tribute’s current description in your game, and do not assume it guarantees a particular drop.

Bargains: pay for a stated loot modification
Bargains are optional add-ons associated with a Tribute. Depending on the option, the cost may be crafting materials, gold, or Obols, and the effect may alter chest contents or item affixes. Wowhead describes these costs and effects; Icy Veins notes that available Bargains are tied to each Tribute. Before confirming, read both the displayed cost and the promised modification. Skip a Bargain if its resource cost outweighs the reward change you actually want.

- Set a goal. Decide which reward category matters, then choose a suitable Tribute from the options currently available to you.
- Check the added challenge. Higher-quality Tributes can make the run harder; choose one your build can handle without sacrificing the Attunement goal.
- Review any Bargain. Confirm the resource cost and exact stated loot effect before paying.
- Clear efficiently. Prioritize events, Spirit Beacons, and elites that offer Attunement without consuming too much time.
- Take worthwhile time extensions. Kill Afflicted enemies when the extra time justifies the detour.
- Adjust to the clock. As time runs low, stop pursuing optional targets and focus on reaching the district boss.
There is no universally best Tribute or Bargain for every build: the choice depends on the reward you need, the added difficulty, the cost of the available modification, and how reliably you can build Attunement before time expires.
