Japan’s Zero Latency VR Zombie Attraction: What It Was—and When It Closed

Zero Latency VR brought free-roam zombie combat to a large play space in Japan, but Tokyo Joypolis says its attraction permanently closed on May 12, 2024.

Japan’s VR “zombie-shooting warehouse” was a free-roam Zero Latency VR attraction reported in 2016 as coming to the country through Sega. Players moved around a large physical play space while seeing a shared virtual world, including a zombie-combat scenario. It is no longer open: Tokyo Joypolis says its Zero Latency VR attraction permanently closed on May 12, 2024.

What the “VR warehouse” was

The warehouse description referred to the scale and movement of the experience, not to a real warehouse filled with zombies. Zero Latency VR, a Melbourne-based platform, used a large physical play area where participants could walk while wearing a head-mounted display and tracking equipment. The virtual environment made those movements part of a shared game world.

GamesBeat’s June 8, 2016 report compared the play space to a basketball court and described other players appearing in the virtual environment in real time. Tokyo Joypolis later described its version as free-roam play for up to six simultaneous players. The available details establish a venue-scale multiplayer format, rather than a conventional game played while standing in one fixed spot.

How the zombie-shooting experience worked

Zombie survival and shooting was one of the scenarios, not necessarily the attraction’s only game. In the mode described by GamesBeat, players fought waves of zombies inside a simulated building. The building was part of the virtual setting; the physical space was the arena in which players moved.

Because participants shared the virtual environment, they could move through it together rather than experience separate, isolated headset sessions. Tokyo Joypolis’s description lists zombie content and up to six players at once, though the cited pages do not establish a complete game catalogue or further operating details.

Where it was—and whether it is open now

The 2016 GamesBeat report said Sega was bringing Zero Latency VR to Japan for a permanent installation, but it does not establish the precise Japanese opening date or location. Tokyo Joypolis’s official attraction page identifies a Zero Latency VR installation there and states that it permanently closed on May 12, 2024. It is therefore not a current attraction to book at Tokyo Joypolis.

The venue’s current attractions and calendar pages do not list a current Zero Latency VR experience. Those listings do not establish that another Japanese venue offers an equivalent attraction, so a present-day alternative should be checked directly with its operator before planning a visit.

Why the 2016 announcement mattered

GamesBeat framed Sega’s decision as part of a destination-entertainment strategy: a large, shared VR experience could give people a reason to visit an arcade rather than play only at home. That is the context of the 2016 report, not a current statement of Sega’s strategy.
