The company said the higher category would let it preserve the freedom of the in-game Group Pose photo feature without adding restrictions. Square Enix also said the rating change would not alter game content, the terms of service or service fees.
Why is FFXIV’s rating changing in Japan?
Square Enix said retaining CERO C would require restrictions on Group Pose, the game’s in-game photography feature. Its announcement said it chose CERO D “in order to maintain the freedom of Group Pose without adding restrictions.” The stated choice was Square Enix’s; the announcement does not say CERO ordered the change.

The company’s notice was published on 25 March 2026 and described the change as planned for Patch 7.5. The patch page lists 28 April 2026 as the release date. The announcement page still uses prospective wording, so these sources establish the plan and timing, not that the current rating label has since been independently confirmed.
What do CERO C and CERO D mean?
CERO is Japan’s game-content rating system. Square Enix’s explainer lists these categories:

| Category | Square Enix’s age band |
|---|---|
| CERO C | 15 and up |
| CERO D | 17 and up |
| CERO Z | 18 and over only |
These are Japanese CERO category age bands, not a worldwide rating or a new account-eligibility rule. Square Enix distinguishes CERO’s content-rating purpose from the age restrictions in the game’s terms of service. It advises players under 17 to consult a parent or guardian about using the service following the announced change.

Square Enix said the rating change itself would not change Final Fantasy XIV’s content, terms of service or service fees. The stated reason for changing the category was to avoid restricting Group Pose, not to announce a change to the feature or to the game’s service terms.
