Whether you can move to a newer console version depends on your platform, edition, purchase type, region and the current store offer. The US PlayStation Store and Xbox listings reviewed describe discounted upgrade routes for some digital owners, while the PlayStation Digital Deluxe listing includes both PS4 and PS5 digital versions.
What upgrade does each platform offer?
| Current copy | What the listed offer says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 digital version | The US PlayStation Store listing for the PS5 version says PS4 digital owners can get the PS5 digital version for a discounted price. It does not describe a universal free upgrade. PlayStation Store: Hogwarts Legacy PS5 Version | Check the PS5 product page while signed in to the account that owns the PS4 digital game. The offer may vary by region or change over time. |
| PlayStation Digital Deluxe Edition | The US PlayStation Store listing says the product entitles the buyer to download both the digital PS4 version and the digital PS5 version. This applies to that listed product, not automatically to every edition or physical copy. PlayStation Store: Hogwarts Legacy Digital Deluxe Edition | Confirm the exact edition and product in your account’s regional store before purchasing again. |
| Xbox One digital version | The Xbox listing says Xbox One digital owners can get the Xbox Series X|S digital version for a discounted price; it does not promise a free Standard Edition upgrade. Xbox Store: Hogwarts Legacy | Check the game’s listing from the account that owns the Xbox One digital copy. |
| PS4 disc or Xbox One disc | The cited store terms establish selected digital entitlements, not blanket disc-upgrade eligibility. | Check the specific edition and disc conditions in the relevant regional store before assuming the disc qualifies. |
| Nintendo Switch to Switch 2 | The official FAQ names Nintendo Switch as a platform, but the reviewed official sources do not establish free or paid Switch 2 upgrade terms. Hogwarts Legacy official FAQ | Do not assume an upgrade is available; look for a specific official Switch 2 product or support statement. |
How to check your own entitlement
- Identify your copy. Note your current console, edition (such as Standard or Digital Deluxe), and whether you bought the game digitally or on disc.
- Open the destination version’s listing in your account store. For PlayStation, check the PS5 version; for Xbox, check the Xbox Series X|S version. Sign in with the account that owns the existing digital copy.
- Read the product-specific entitlement language. Look for whether the listing says both versions are included or offers the destination version at a discounted price. Do not treat a discount as a free upgrade.
- Confirm region and current terms before buying. The cited PlayStation examples are US listings, and prices, discounts and availability can vary across regions or change. The relevant account store is the place to verify the live offer.
Does save transfer mean you own the newer version?
No. Save access and game ownership are separate. WB Games says PS4 save data can be transferred to PS5. On Xbox, WB Games describes cross-generation save use for players who own the game on both consoles, are online and use the account that created the save. A transferable save does not itself grant a license to the destination version. WB Games Support: How to Transfer Save Data
Why the edition and purchase type matter
Upgrade terms attach to a specific product listing and purchase entitlement, not simply to owning some version of Hogwarts Legacy. The Digital Deluxe PlayStation listing explicitly includes both digital generations; the separate PS5 listing describes a discounted route for PS4 digital owners. The reviewed Xbox listing likewise describes a discounted route for Xbox One digital owners. Those statements do not establish a blanket rule for all Standard editions, disc copies, regions or stores.
If you are considering buying another copy, first compare the exact product page with the edition and purchase type you already own. This avoids paying for a version your entitlement already includes, while also avoiding the assumption that a disc or another region’s offer will qualify.
