Microsoft limits how much value you can add to or redeem into a Microsoft account each day, how much you can spend each day, and how much account balance you can hold. The standard limits are USD 1,000 equivalent per day for adding or redeeming, USD 1,000 equivalent per day for spending, and USD 1,000 equivalent in stored balance per account. These are value limits—not a universal cap on the number of Xbox gift cards. Country-specific limits can be lower.
What limits apply to Xbox gift cards?
An Xbox gift card adds its full value to your Microsoft account balance when redeemed. Microsoft’s limits therefore apply to the account balance and account activity, rather than to a fixed number of cards. Microsoft’s live account-balance limits page states these standard caps, expressed in USD or the equivalent in the account’s local currency:

The daily add-or-redeem cap and the stored-balance ceiling are separate. For example, a valid card can still be impossible to redeem if adding its value would put the account over its balance limit. The daily limit also counts value, not card quantity; Microsoft does not publish a universal maximum number of separate cards that can be redeemed regardless of denomination.
Country and currency can change the limits
Microsoft lists lower local maximum balances in several markets. The figures below are the maximum balance amounts shown on its limits page, not a promise that every transaction in that region will be accepted:

Microsoft notes that local law may affect limits and that exceeding restrictions may temporarily block redemptions or purchases using account balance. Check the current country and region table for your account before buying or redeeming credit.
Check region and balance before redeeming
- Check the country or region registered to your Microsoft account and its current balance.
- Compare the card’s currency and value with the local balance maximum and the amount you have already added or redeemed that day.
- Redeem only a card issued for the account’s jurisdiction. Microsoft says currency denominations can be added only to accounts registered in a jurisdiction that recognizes that currency.
- If redemption fails, check the balance and applicable limits before assuming the code is invalid. Microsoft may also apply additional transaction restrictions or require another payment option to help prevent fraud or unauthorized use.
Microsoft’s gift-card redemption instructions explain how to add the full card value to your account. After redemption, the balance can be used at Microsoft Store online, on Windows, and on Xbox, subject to regional and product restrictions. Make sure you choose an Xbox gift card in the correct country or region.

What happens to redeemed balance?
Microsoft says ordinary, non-promotional account balance does not expire. Promotional balance may expire under the promotion’s terms. Account balance cannot be transferred to another person or Microsoft account, and it cannot be converted to another currency. Those rules make it important to redeem credit to the account and region where you intend to spend it.
