Is There a Female Homunculus? The Neuroscience Map and the Alchemical Myth

A female homunculus exists as a neuroscience representation of cortical touch mapping. It is a sculpture, not a literal person—and it differs from the alchemical homunculus.

Yes—but the answer depends on what “homunculus” means. In neuroscience, a female somatosensory homunculus is a sculpted representation of how the brain processes touch across the body. It is not a miniature person. In alchemy, a homunculus was a supposedly artificially generated human, an idea preserved in historical writing but not demonstrated biology.

What does “homunculus” mean?

The word refers to two different things. In neuroscience, a cortical homunculus is a distorted figure that represents how much of the cortex is associated with sensing or controlling different body regions. In alchemical writing, a homunculus was a claimed artificially generated miniature human. One is an explanatory map; the other is a historical claim about creating life.

Meaning Field and purpose What it denotes Evidence status
Somatosensory homunculus Neuroscience; illustrates the brain’s cortical representation of bodily sensation A visual map, not a literal person A female version has been represented in a modern sculpture, though the evidence and interpretation have limits
Alchemical homunculus Alchemy; describes a proposed way to generate a human artificially A supposedly created miniature human A historical belief, not a verified biological process

Does a female somatosensory homunculus exist?

Yes, as a research-informed artistic representation. Haven Wright and Preston Foerder’s article, “The Missing Female Homunculus,” appeared in Leonardo, volume 54, issue 6, in December 2021. The authors describe their work as, to their knowledge, the first sculpted three-dimensional female somatosensory homunculus. The journal abstract also notes that a few female homunculi had previously been drawn. Read the article in Leonardo.

The sculpture represents cortical processing of touch, not a woman’s actual proportions. Like other homunculi, it exaggerates body regions according to their relative cortical representation. Large features therefore indicate how the map depicts sensation, not the size or importance of those parts in ordinary anatomy.

Why was a female version missing?

Traditional homunculus figures were largely based on mapping work associated with Wilder Penfield. BrainFacts.org reports that Penfield’s experimental population included men and women, but women made up about 10% of it; the article also describes limited discussion of women-specific findings. That percentage is BrainFacts’ account of Penfield’s population, not a statistic for all somatotopy research or neuroscience. BrainFacts’ 2022 account of the missing female homunculus.

Wright and Foerder’s sculpture reflects the evidence and existing depictions cited in their article, but it should not be treated as a complete, definitive map of female sensation. BrainFacts also reports neuroscientist Marieke L. D. (Mieke) Einstein’s criticism that the result risks presenting women as a male figure with breasts and vulval anatomy added. That concern highlights the difference between making an underrepresented subject visible and having a comprehensive, women-specific evidence base.

What about the alchemical homunculus?

That is a separate historical idea, not a female neuroscience figure. A digitized English translation of Paracelsus describes an alleged process involving semen, a sealed vessel, incubation, and feeding, and calls the supposed result a homunculus. The passage records what the historical text claimed; it is not evidence that such a being was created or that the procedure works. Read the digitized translation of The Hermetic and Alchemical Writings of Paracelsus, volume I.

How to tell which meaning is intended

  • If the discussion is about the brain, sensation, touch, or cortical maps, “homunculus” means a representation of bodily processing.
  • If it is about alchemy or artificial life, it refers to the historical claim of a created miniature human.
  • “Female homunculus” without context is ambiguous, so “female somatosensory homunculus” is the clearer term for the neuroscience sculpture.
