Square Enix’s newly shared official render of Sora is the immediate reason some fans are calling this an “end of an era.” It points to a new visual chapter for the hero, not evidence that Square Enix or the Kingdom Hearts series is ending. Kingdom Hearts IV is still presented as an upcoming game, and other recent franchise activity suggests the series is continuing.
What prompted the “end of an era” reaction?
GameRant’s August 18, 2026 coverage, indexed by IMDb, connected the phrase to an official render of Sora released by Square Enix in the context of a D23 look at Kingdom Hearts IV. The available report does not specify which particular design feature prompted the reaction, so it is safest to understand the phrase as commentary on Sora’s new appearance rather than a confirmed change to the franchise’s status. What else was reported about Kingdom Hearts IV at D23?
The same report describes the D23 material as the most in-depth look at the game yet, and says it included a Disney/Pixar Coco world and playable Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. These details are reported by GameRant in the indexed excerpt; they should not be treated as independently verified official specifications here. The report gives 2027 as the game’s release year, but a current release window and supported platforms are not established by the available information.
Is Kingdom Hearts or Square Enix ending?
No evidence in the coverage establishes that either is ending. “End of an era” is a dramatic description of Sora’s new look, not an announcement that the franchise or publisher is closing. Nintendo Life’s recent coverage instead points to continuing activity around the series: a Switch 2 collection release, Kingdom Hearts IV, an anniversary event, and an announced animated series associated with Disney+ and Disney Channel. The animation’s release date and commercial availability have not been established. Nintendo Life coverage

What can players play now?
Nintendo Life reports that KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] released for Switch 2 in North America and the UK/EU on October 8, 2026. It describes the physical edition as a Game-Key Card release, so a boxed copy should not be assumed to contain all game data on the card. Regional packaging, edition details, stock, and any download requirements should be checked for the specific copy and region.
That collection is the concrete option for players looking to revisit earlier entries on Switch 2. Kingdom Hearts IV remains the upcoming-game option in the reporting, but the available details do not confirm current platforms or a release window beyond GameRant’s reported 2027 year.
