Claw grip can make it easier to press face buttons while keeping your thumb on an analog stick, but it puts the fingers and wrist in a more flexed position. The usual controller hold is a better starting point for a neutral wrist posture. Choose based on the game’s inputs, your hand’s reach, and whether the position remains comfortable.
What does “palm controller” mean?
“Palm controller” is not established in the sources as a distinct controller grip. The comparison that best fits the question is claw grip versus the conventional, or standard, controller hold. In the standard hold, index fingers operate the triggers while thumbs reach the sticks and face buttons; a thumb may need to leave a stick to press a button. A gamepad reference describes this conventional arrangement.
In claw grip, a player curls an index finger over the face buttons while keeping a thumb on a stick; the middle finger may operate a trigger. That positioning can make simultaneous inputs more accessible, but changes finger and wrist posture. A controller-grip explainer outlines this adaptation.
What claw grip changes during play
The main practical benefit is access: you may be able to press a face button without lifting your thumb from the stick. That can suit games or control schemes that ask for those inputs at the same time. It is an input-access trade-off, not proof of better aim, faster reactions, higher rank, or improved results across games and players.

#1 Best Overall
- TMR Joysticks - Offering higher sensitivity, greater precision, and enhanced durability.
- 8BitDo Exclusive Wireless Technology - “8Speed”, it delivers an exceptionally stable 2.4G connection with ultra-low latency under 1ms. Engineered for rock-solid reliability, it features strong anti-interference and a 10m range with virtually no lag.
- Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection). Customizable 6-Axis Motion Control. Turbo function. Rumble vibration. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.
Whether that access helps depends on the specific game, button mapping, controller shape, and your hand’s reach. If your thumb can move comfortably between stick and buttons, claw may offer little practical advantage.
How the grips compare ergonomically
Children’s Health’s esports injury-prevention guidance says the traditional controller grip typically keeps the wrist neutral and is better for wrist and hand optimization. It says claw grip places the wrist and fingers in greater flexion and carries increased injury risk. This is general ergonomic guidance, not a diagnosis or a quantified estimate of risk for an individual player. Read Children’s Health’s guidance.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
No controlled comparison is established here that measures long-term injury outcomes, comfort, or performance for claw versus standard grip. So the practical decision is not a universal health or skill verdict: pay attention to posture and comfort while using the inputs your game requires.
How to choose a grip
- Start with your usual relaxed hold. Check whether your wrist feels relatively straight and your fingers can reach the controls without straining.
- Try claw only if the inputs call for it. If a game repeatedly requires a face-button press while your thumb stays on a stick, test whether curling a finger over the buttons makes that action easier.
- Notice comfort during a normal session. Consider whether the position remains comfortable and whether your hand feels strained or fatigued. Do not treat pain or fatigue as a skill hurdle to push through; return to a relaxed hold or adjust your position.
- Choose for your hands, not someone else’s technique. Controller shape and hand size affect reach. Microsoft says Xbox Series X controller refinements were intended to fit a wider range of hand sizes; that design goal does not guarantee fit for everyone or establish a claw-specific advantage. Microsoft’s controller design notes also describe tactile dots on triggers and bumpers to improve grip and feel.
What the evidence can—and cannot—settle
The available guidance supports a useful distinction: claw can improve access to simultaneous controls, while the traditional hold is the more neutral-wrist starting point in Children’s Health’s guidance. It does not establish that either grip is best for everyone, or quantify comparative performance, comfort, or long-term injury outcomes.
