Sometimes. Boosting is not defined the same way in every game. Publishers may treat account sharing, deliberate rank manipulation, or teaming with cheaters to inflate rank as cheating or another rules violation. Whether playing with a stronger friend is allowed depends on the specific game and the conduct involved.
What does “boosting” mean?
In gaming, boosting generally means helping an account gain rank or competitive progress in a way that undermines the game’s ranking system. But publishers draw the line differently: some focus on another person playing on your account, while others also prohibit deliberate rank inflation, win-trading, or teaming with cheaters.
For example, Riot Games describes a more-skilled player logging into someone else’s account to play ranked matches as boosting. Riot also uses “hitchhiking” for queueing with another account to be carried to a higher division. Its 2025 explanation of MMR and rank manipulation and its ranked penalty FAQ address these behaviors within Riot’s games.
What conduct do game rules prohibit?

Is carrying a friend in a party or duo queue cheating?
Not necessarily. Playing with a more-skilled friend does not, by itself, establish a rule violation across all games. The policies above target particular behavior—such as letting someone else access your account, deliberately manipulating rank, or queueing with cheaters—not every instance of a skilled player helping a friend win.

That does not guarantee that a particular duo queue is permitted. Some games may set their own party, matchmaking, or rank-difference restrictions. Check the official rules for the title you play, especially if the arrangement uses alternate accounts or is intended to manipulate matchmaking or rank.
Can you get banned for boosting?
Yes, in some games. Riot says account sharing or selling can result in an immediate ban, and Supercell warns that account-sharing boosts can lead to bans, sometimes permanent ones. Those are publisher-specific examples, not a universal penalty schedule. Rules and enforcement can change, and may vary by title or territory.

How to check whether your situation breaks the rules
- Find the current official policy. Use the game publisher’s support or fair-play page, not a boosting service’s description of what is “safe.”
- Look for the exact behavior. Check whether the rules address account sharing, another person playing ranked on your account, smurfing, MMR manipulation, win-trading, or teaming with cheaters.
- Check party and matchmaking restrictions. If you plan to queue with a friend, confirm any rank-gap or alternate-account rules for that game.
- When unclear, avoid account access or coordinated rank manipulation. Ask the publisher’s support team for guidance before proceeding.
Because these policies are game-specific and can change, verify the current official rules for your title and region before relying on an older policy or a general definition.
