Those are impressions from one pre-release build, not a review of the finished game—but they make a stronger case than zombie-smashing alone.
What the Gamescom hands-on showed
In his September 4, 2025 preview for TechRadar Gaming, Rob Dwiar compared the Gamescom build with an earlier Summer Game Fest session. He said the controls felt smoother this time, parkour flowed across cars, walls and gaps, and weapons had more weight. Those descriptions reflect his experience with that build; they are not measured performance results or a guarantee of how every version plays.
One weapon stood out: a saw blade launcher. Dwiar also called attention to directional gore, where the visual effect reflected the direction of a strike. Together, those details suggested a combat system with a more forceful, physical feel than a basic sequence of hits.
Why the side quest mattered
The most persuasive part of the session may have been its small-scale mission. Dwiar investigated a water supply that had been cut off, found a family trapped by the situation, restored the supply and escorted them to safety. The mission brought together exploration, scavenging and infected combat, but its payoff was helping people rather than simply clearing another arena.

He saw the quest as a reason to leave the main path: side content could offer gear and story while making Castor Woods feel inhabited. That remains a promising example, not proof that every side mission will be as involving. Dwiar’s enthusiasm about exploring the region was conditional on other quests matching the one he played.
How the preview fits the game’s survival-horror pitch
Dying Light: The Beast stars Kyle Crane, whose time in the Baron’s experiments left him struggling with infected DNA. Techland’s premise is that Crane can draw on Beast-like power, but the developers describe those bursts as temporary—not a replacement for the series’ parkour and stealth. In an Xbox Wire interview published July 18, 2025, the team framed darkness as a shift in the survival balance: the player can become prey instead of hunter.

That emphasis on night danger is deliberate. Game Director Nathan Lemaire described it simply: “Night is truly pitch black.” Franchise Director Tymon Smektała said, “We heard our fans.” The interview explains that limited flashlight visibility and carefully controlled zombie appearances are intended to build suspense. These are developer descriptions of the design goal, not independent findings about how frightening the finished game is.
The developers also pitched a mix of melee, firearms and drivable 4×4 vehicles, with costs attached to each choice. Ammunition and other resources are scarce; gunfire can attract enemies; vehicles consume fuel, can break down and may draw attention. Castor Woods is described as a handcrafted valley with town, forest, swamp, farmland, mountain, industrial and village areas. Art Director Katarzyna Tarnacka-Polito said, “For Castor Woods, we made a conscious decision to handcraft the world instead of using procedural tools.” The Xbox interview’s embedded store copy describes co-op for up to four players.

What changed after the preview
The Gamescom session took place before launch, and its publication date should not be confused with the game’s eventual release. Techland’s June 7, 2025 announcement originally listed September 18; the date was later moved, and Dwiar’s preview cited September 19. The original announcement lists PC, PlayStation 5 Pro, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S among the platforms. You can read the release-date-move announcement and Techland’s original game announcement for the official updates and premise.
There is now a separate post-launch development to keep in view. On March 26, 2026, Techland announced Restored Land, a challenging solo survival experience. In it, killed zombies and looted items do not respawn, shops have reduced stock and higher prices, and hunger and flashlight batteries add pressure. An optional One Life mode deletes the save on death. The announcement also describes Roadkill Rallies and additional encounters, finishers, achievements and updates. Techland said Standard Edition owners would automatically receive the Restored Land Edition upgrade; check your platform’s current storefront for regional edition names and entitlements.

Restored Land arrived after Dwiar’s preview, so it does not change what he experienced at Gamescom or establish how he would judge the later additions. The preview is best read as an account of a promising pre-release session, while the 2026 announcement describes a later addition to the game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the hands-on give a reason to be excited?
Yes, if what you want is a clearer sign of how the pieces might work together. Smoother-feeling parkour and weightier weapons address the moment-to-moment action; the water-rescue quest shows how exploration and combat could support a more personal story; and the developers’ survival-horror pitch gives nighttime and resource use meaningful trade-offs. The limit is equally clear: this was one writer’s experience with one preview build and one side quest. It offers reasons to watch the game, not evidence that every mission or system will deliver the same way.
