What evolving and powering up do
Evolving
Evolution uses species-dependent Candy and generally raises a Pokémon’s CP and HP. Some Pokémon also require an item or a special condition, such as completing a task, being traded, using a particular Lure, or walking with the Pokémon as your Buddy. Check the Pokémon’s details for its requirements before planning to evolve it. Niantic’s evolution guide describes these different paths.

Powering up
A power-up raises CP and HP and uses Stardust and Candy. At higher levels, it may also require Candy XL. The game displays the cost, which can rise as the Pokémon gets stronger; check the amount shown before confirming. See Niantic’s Powering Up Pokémon guide.
Why evolving first is a useful default
Evolving first lets you inspect the evolved Pokémon—including its CP and attacks—before deciding whether more investment is worthwhile. It’s a resource-management approach, not a guarantee that evolution first is mechanically cheaper. The official help pages do not document a universal comparison of total costs or final CP for the two possible orders.

Check its appraisal before spending
Appraisal can help you judge a Pokémon’s potential before investing resources. Evolving or powering it up does not improve its appraisal, so assess it before either action if that information matters to your decision. Niantic’s appraisal guide explains the star rating and stats.

Choose based on what you need
- Not sure you want to invest in this Pokémon? Appraise it first. If you still want its evolved form, evolve it, then decide whether the displayed power-up cost is worth paying.
- Need the evolved form now? Evolve it when you meet the requirements shown in the game; check for any species-specific condition as well as the Candy cost.
- Want to power it up? Review the Stardust, Candy, and any Candy XL required in the summary before confirming.
