For ordinary cash in Red Dead Redemption 2 story mode, selling a carryable animal whole is the convenient default if you do not need its pelt or parts. Skin it when you want materials for crafting or clothing, need camp donations, or are working on a skinning challenge. There is no established universal rule that a whole animal pays more than the combined value of its skinned carcass, pelt, and other parts.
Choose based on what you need from the animal

These are distinct destinations and uses: butchers take carcasses, Pearson accepts donations, and the Trapper is associated with pelts and crafted items. GameSpot’s Trapper guide lists locations; one endgame location is chapter-gated, so access can depend on story progress.

What “whole” and “skinned” mean for your inventory
A whole animal is an intact carcass. After skinning, the pelt and the skinned carcass are separate items; skinning may also provide meat or other parts. So comparing the price of a whole carcass with the price of only its pelt does not compare the full proceeds available from skinning.
Item values vary by species and condition. The available itemized examples do not establish a comprehensive, authoritative rule comparing a whole carcass against the sum of every item obtained by skinning it. Treat whole as the easy cash-sale choice—not as a guaranteed way to earn the most money in every case. The Red Dead Wiki’s animal-products and carcass entries distinguish item types and values, but should not be read as proof of a universal profit rule.

Protect quality when you plan to sell or craft
Animal quality matters to the value and usefulness of what you collect. RDR2.org’s hunting guide explains that three-star animals can yield perfect pelts and recommends matching your weapon to the animal’s size for a clean kill. If you need a particular perfect pelt, use the appropriate weapon and avoid damaging the animal; skinning cannot restore quality lost through a poor kill.
Give legendary animals a crafting-first check
Legendary pelts unlock clothing and gear upgrades, according to RDR2.org’s hunting guide. If you want those items, preserve the pelt route rather than treating the animal as an ordinary immediate-cash sale. The claim that legendary carcasses are Trapper-only appears in community-wiki material rather than a primary source, so check the in-game item and available destination instead of relying on that as a universal handling rule.

Story mode is not Red Dead Online
This advice concerns single-player story mode, where the relevant systems include Pearson and Master Hunter challenges. Red Dead Online has separate roles and economy mechanics, and discussions about whether to sell whole animals or separated parts conflict. Do not assume the story-mode guidance or prices apply to Online.
