Its REV System gives offense a distinct resource-driven identity, while Just Defense and Dodge Attacks preserve familiar defensive ideas. Whether that makes it one of the best fighters of recent years is ultimately a judgment for players to make; the official feature list explains what the game offers, not how it feels in a match.
What kind of fighting game is City of the Wolves?
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is SNK’s new mainline entry in the series, released April 24, 2025. It follows Garou: Mark of the Wolves (1999), returning to South Town and its cast while presenting a new story centered on Rock Howard. SNK’s setup has Terry Bogard take Rock under his wing; Rock later sets out to search for the mother he believed was gone. SNK’s product page lays out the premise and platform availability.
That makes the game both a continuation for longtime fans and a new entry point for players who do not know the series history. The defining question for a fighting game is what happens in the match itself, and here the main hook is the REV System alongside updated versions of defensive mechanics such as Just Defense and Dodge Attacks.
How does the REV System shape combat?
The REV System adds a resource layer to combat. PlayStation’s feature description names REV Meter techniques including REV Arts and REV Accel, while SNK’s Season 3 announcement describes the REV System as central to the game. These are offensive options tied to the system, rather than a replacement for the game’s other mechanics. The details matter: the feature list does not establish whether a particular move is balanced, how it performs at high level, or whether the system produces a better competitive game.

Just Defense and Dodge Attacks bring recognizable defensive tools into this newer framework. Together, the advertised systems suggest a fight shaped by both the choice to spend REV resources on offense and the timing and use of defensive options. For an experienced player deciding whether the game has enough to learn, these mechanics provide distinct areas to explore; the official descriptions alone cannot substitute for evaluating their feel and interaction in actual play.
PlayStation’s product page lists the REV Meter techniques and the game’s other modes. Treat that as a guide to what is included, not evidence of balance or competitive quality.

Can newcomers get started without giving up depth?
The game offers an accessible control option, which can lower the barrier to performing actions for someone who is new to fighting games. That is not the same as removing the strategic layer: control accessibility and combat depth answer different questions. A new player can use a simpler way to issue moves while still learning when to attack, defend, or use the REV system.
For veterans, the useful test is whether the controls and systems leave room to make deliberate decisions, not whether every input is difficult. The available official material establishes the accessible option and the named mechanics, but does not establish how the control choices compare in execution or competitive play.

Episodes of South Town
Episodes of South Town (EOST) is the solo RPG mode. PlayStation describes it as a full RPG experience built around battles and skill building. That makes it a different proposition from a traditional arcade ladder: EOST is the mode to choose if you want a structured single-player path with progression.
Arcade Mode
Arcade Mode is also listed as a mode, offering the more familiar fighting-game route through a series of matches. It is separate from EOST’s RPG structure, so players looking for a straightforward solo set of fights have an option alongside the longer-form mode.

- HIGH ENERGY SOCIAL DEDUCTION: Split into hidden teams of Villagers and Werewolves and argue, accuse and vote in a conversation driven party game that rewards sharp observation, table talk and reading your friends.
- MODERATOR LED DAY AND NIGHT PHASES: A neutral Moderator narrates the story, manages the “day” debates and “night” actions, and keeps the game flowing so players can stay focused on bluffing, strategy and social interaction.
- ICONIC ROLES WITH SPECIAL POWERS: Includes classic roles like Seer alongside other characters that gain secret information or influence the vote, creating tense choices for both Villagers and Werewolves each time the group plays.
- FLEXIBLE FOR MANY GROUP SIZES: Scales smoothly from classrooms and clubs to parties and game nights, supporting a wide range of player counts while each new mix of people creates fresh dynamics and surprising outcomes.
- ACCESSIBLE YET DEEP GAMEPLAY: Simple rules teach quickly, but hidden roles, shifting alliances and table meta make Ultimate Werewolf a favorite for fans of deduction, mystery and bluff based games who enjoy returning again and again.
Online play
SNK advertises rollback netcode and cross-platform capabilities for online play; PlayStation specifically describes rollback netcode and cross-platform matchmaking. Rollback is a networking approach intended to make online fighting-game inputs more responsive when connections have delay. Those feature claims do not demonstrate current matchmaking population, regional availability, connection quality in a particular match, or the health of the competitive scene.

SNK lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X|S in digital and physical formats, with Steam and the Epic Games Store as digital platforms. Edition contents and prices can vary by storefront and region, so check the listing where you plan to buy rather than assuming a bundle has the same contents everywhere.
| Edition or format | What the official information establishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Base game only, according to SNK’s anniversary announcement. | Confirm the regional storefront listing and platform before purchase. |
| Digital bundles | SNK’s anniversary announcement distinguishes digital bundles containing season passes. | Read the exact bundle contents; a bundle’s pass inclusion depends on the listing. |
| Revenge Edition | SNK’s Season 3 announcement says it includes Seasons 1–3. | Prices can vary by storefront, so verify the current regional price and contents. |
| Physical console copies | SNK lists physical formats for PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S. | Do not assume a physical base-game copy includes digital season-pass content; check the package listing. |
For the current official descriptions, see SNK’s anniversary announcement and its Season 3 announcement.
What is included in Season 3?
Season 3 began July 23, 2026, and SNK announced monthly content updates. As of October 8, 2026, the announced schedule lists Rick Strowd for July, Duck King for August, Kim Kaphwan for September, a mystery character in October, Laocorn in November, and another mystery character in December. SNK notes that the schedule is subject to change, so the October and later entries should be treated as scheduled rather than guaranteed release dates.
The schedule is relevant if you are choosing between the base game and a bundle that includes season-pass content. It is not a reason by itself to assume a particular character is already available or that every storefront presents the same bundle or price.
Is it worth considering as a competitive game?
The feature set gives players reasons to look at it as more than a solo campaign: the game lists online play, advertises rollback netcode and cross-platform matchmaking, and builds combat around the REV System and defensive mechanics. But none of those facts answers whether queues are active in your region, whether connections are reliable for you, or how well the mechanics are balanced. Those judgments depend on current play and cannot be inferred from a product page.
Steam’s store page showed 81% positive English user reviews from 1,628 English reviews and 89% positive recent reviews from 79 recent reviews at the time of the source snapshot. Those figures are a changing Steam user-review snapshot, not critic consensus or a measure of competitive quality; the live totals may differ.
