In July 2025, it removed adult NSFW pages from public search, browsing and recommendations while reviewing payment-processor requirements. That deindexing left many pages and downloads accessible through profiles, collections and buyers’ libraries, although itch.io said some individual pages could be permanently removed. In its latest dated status here, from June 2026, an itch.io admin said NSFW-tagged pages that accept payments were still not being indexed.
What happened to adult games on itch.io?
On July 24, 2025, itch.io announced that it had deindexed adult NSFW content from browse and search during a review tied to payment processors. The platform later clarified that deindexing also removed pages from recommendations. This was a change to public discovery, not a blanket deletion of every adult game.
There were two different outcomes: pages could remain functional but become difficult to find through itch.io’s discovery tools, or individual pages could receive a content notice and be permanently removed after review. itch.io said affected accounts would be notified by email. No comprehensive count of affected games is established by the platform statements cited here.
What does “deindexed” mean for a game page?
In its July 31, 2025 glossary, itch.io defined deindexing as removal from its public discovery channels. A deindexed page would not appear in search, browse pages or recommendations, but would remain functional and could still appear in a user’s library, collections or profile. A content notice or permanent removal is more serious than deindexing. itch.io said that a page receiving a content notice was one the platform had concluded it could no longer support. Buyers could continue downloading purchases or keys from their libraries unless the creator removed the page or its files.
Can buyers still download games they purchased?
itch.io said purchases remained available in buyers’ libraries unless the creator took down the page or removed its files. That qualification matters: a library listing is not a guarantee that files will remain available if the creator removes them. The platform recommended backing up DRM-free purchases, so buyers who can still access a game may wish to keep a local copy.

Can players find free adult games now?
On July 31, 2025, itch.io said it was reindexing free adult NSFW content, provided the creator turned off payments by selecting the “No Payments” option. This was a specific condition for the free-content reindexing—not a promise that every page would automatically return to search or recommendations. The same update said paid adult content would be reintroduced gradually, subject to ongoing processor discussions. See the July 31 update.
Are paid adult games indexed again?
The latest dated status established here is from June 2026. In a forum reply, itch.io admin leafo wrote: “Unfortunately, at this time, NSFW tagged content that accepts payments is not being indexed.” Read the forum reply.

itch.io’s official updates index, checked October 8, 2026, lists the 2025 NSFW announcement but no later NSFW-specific update. That does not prove no change occurred elsewhere, but the available official statements do not establish a general restoration of indexing for paid adult pages, completion of the proposed content-warning system, or a settled arrangement with new payment partners. The gradual return described in July 2025 should therefore be understood as a plan, not a confirmed outcome.
Why did itch.io deindex the content?
itch.io said payment processors were scrutinizing content hosted on the platform and connected that scrutiny to a campaign by Collective Shout concerning No Mercy, which itch.io said had been banned in April 2025. The platform described payment processing as essential to creators throughout its marketplace and said losing partners such as PayPal or Stripe could affect transactions and payouts beyond adult games. These are itch.io’s stated reasons for acting urgently; they are the platform’s account of the decision.

itch.io also said a narrow review was difficult because of its open publishing model. In its July 28, 2025 FAQ, the platform cited over 2 million product pages and said creators could publish with minimal barriers, while tags were not reliable enough to support a sufficiently targeted audit. The figure is itch.io’s own 2025 statement, not an independently audited count.

itch.io said its adult-content policy had long required creators who collect money to comply with the acceptable-use policies of every payment processor on their accounts. The July 28 FAQ said Stripe payments for 18+ content had been suspended “for the foreseeable future” while itch.io awaited determinations from Stripe and PayPal. The platform also added a list of prohibited themes to clarify what it might review, while acknowledging that some terms could be ambiguous.

In its July 31 update, itch.io relayed Stripe’s explanation: “Stripe is currently unable to support sexually explicit content due to restrictions placed on them by their banking partners, despite card networks generally supporting adult content (with the appropriate registrations). Stripe has indicated that they hope to be able to support adult content in the future.” itch.io said it was talking with other payment partners; the cited statements do not confirm that a replacement processor was secured.
