What kind of fighting game is All-Star Battle R?
Bandai Namco’s September 2022 launch announcement described All-Star Battle R as a fighter featuring 50 playable characters drawn from the story’s arcs. Its combat includes hit stops, dash jumps, combos, and an Assist battle system. The appeal is as much the licensed cast and JoJo presentation as the fighting mechanics: this is designed to bring the series’ characters together in matchups, including imagined “What-If” encounters. Bandai Namco’s launch announcement gives the launch roster count; later downloadable characters mean that figure should not be read as a current complete-roster total.
What do reviews say about it?
The available review coverage points to a trade-off: reviewers value the size and appeal of a substantial JoJo fighting game, while noting that its online implementation and changes from the earlier All-Star Battle may disappoint some players. Nintendo Life’s Switch review excerpt describes it as deeper than a typical 3D arena anime fighter, but not as deep as a leading tournament fighter. That is a useful distinction for setting expectations: the game can offer plenty to explore without being the strongest pick for someone seeking a highly refined competitive fighter. Nintendo Life’s review is one perspective, not evidence of a unanimous critical verdict.

Nintendo’s official Switch listing describes more than 100 battles in All-Star Battle Mode, as well as character skins and illustrations in the Gallery. That count concerns this mode’s battles, not the number of fighters or online opponents. Nintendo’s Switch listing provides those details.
Is it approachable for beginners?
Yes, there is a simpler way to get started, though it does not remove the depth of the full combat system. In a pre-release interview, producer Kentaro Matano said players can select “easy beat” when choosing a fighter. It lets players connect combos with one button and use special moves. Matano also described Practice Mode as a place to adjust training, and said the game supports console controllers, PC keyboards, and fighting sticks. How do online play and crossplay affect the decision?
Before release, Matano said the game would not use rollback netcode and that there were no plans to add it at that time. He also said cross-platform multiplayer was not supported. Cross-generation play was supported within PlayStation (PS4 and PS5) and within Xbox (Xbox One and Xbox Series). These are dated design statements from the pre-release interview; they do not establish today’s player population, server status, matchmaking quality, or whether a later update changed netcode. Check current platform-specific information if online play is central to your purchase.
In practical terms, do not assume you can match with friends on another platform. If you are choosing the game mainly for local or solo play, the six launch modes and the Switch listing’s large All-Star Battle mode give you more relevant information than an unverified claim about how active online is.

Which platform should you choose?
Matano’s pre-release performance table listed 30 fps for Nintendo Switch and 60 fps for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Steam. He cautioned that frame rate could vary temporarily depending on playing conditions and environment. These are publisher-provided launch specifications, not independent tests of current performance. The interview lists PC resolution as variable rather than specifying a fixed resolution. The producer interview contains the launch figures.

The Switch is the clearest fit if handheld play matters most; the other platforms had higher listed launch frame rates. Choose the same platform family as friends if you expect to play online, since the producer did not describe cross-platform multiplayer.

Players whose main concern is modern competitive online infrastructure should weigh the launch-era rollback and crossplay caveats carefully, and should verify current online conditions for their platform rather than infer them from old announcements.
