When buying jewels, confirm what the stone and metal actually are, whether the gemstone has been treated, what documentation supports its description, and what the seller’s return policy allows. The title can also refer to a specific person, game, business, or product; this guide uses “jewels” to mean jewelry and gemstones generally.

What should you check before buying jewelry?

A jewelry description can include more than a stone’s name. The metal or gemstone’s identity, quality, weight, cut, color, treatment, durability, origin, and other characteristics may affect what you are buying. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says marketers must represent material product attributes truthfully in its Jewelry Guides.

  • Identify the stone or metal and check that the description is specific.
  • For a gemstone, ask whether it is natural, laboratory-created, or imitation.
  • Ask whether the stone has been treated, whether the treatment is permanent, whether it affects value, and whether it changes care requirements.
  • Check metal quality or purity marks and compare the seller’s return terms.
  • Keep the receipt or order record, including the product details you relied on, such as the stated stone weight or size.

How can you tell whether a gemstone is natural, lab-created, or imitation?

These terms describe different things, so ask the seller to identify which applies rather than relying on a broad gemstone name alone. FTC consumer guidance advises buyers to ask whether a gemstone is natural, laboratory-created, or imitation, and whether it has been treated. The answers help clarify the material being sold; they do not by themselves determine whether a piece is a good purchase.

Ask for treatment details in plain language. FTC guidance says sellers should disclose treatment in circumstances such as when it is not permanent, creates special care requirements, or significantly affects value. Treatment does not automatically make a stone unsuitable: its significance depends on the treatment and the effect on the particular stone.

What do precious-metal marks tell you?

Learn the terms and marks used to describe the quality and purity of platinum, gold, and silver before comparing pieces. The FTC’s guidance for jewelry and precious-metal descriptions is a starting point for understanding how those materials should be represented. A mark is one part of the description; read it alongside the seller’s stated metal content and the receipt or other purchase documentation.

When should you ask for a gemological report?

For a significant gemstone purchase, consider asking for an independent gemological report. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) distinguishes between two common report purposes:

  • Grading report: assesses a gemstone’s quality.
  • Identification report: identifies the gemstone material.

These serve different purposes; an identification report is not the same as a quality grading. Ask what report is available and check that it addresses the question you need answered about the stone.

How should you compare sellers and care requirements?

Compare the same practical details across sellers rather than treating one material or shop as universally better. FTC and GIA consumer guidance points to stone identity, treatment disclosure, metal quality markings, documentation, and return terms as useful checks.

What to compare What to ask or verify
Gemstone identity Is it natural, laboratory-created, or imitation?
Treatment What treatment was used? Is it permanent, does it affect value, and does it require special care?
Metal What metal and quality or purity are stated, and what marks appear on the piece?
Documentation Does the receipt record key facts such as the stated stone weight or size? Is an independent report available for a significant purchase?
Return terms What is the store’s refund and return policy?

Care is material-specific. GIA warns that light and heat can affect some colored gemstones. It also advises leaving ultrasonic cleaning to professionals familiar with the material and the cleaner’s safety. Do not assume a cleaning method that suits one gemstone is safe for another; ask a knowledgeable professional about the particular stone and its treatment.

What should you keep after the purchase?

Retain the receipt, order confirmation, report, and any written description that informed your decision. Make sure the documentation records relevant details the seller represented, such as a gemstone’s stated weight or size, and keep the return-policy terms available. These records help you refer back to what was described if you later have a question about the item or its care.
