It is a design preference, not an announcement that Obsidian is making a third game.
What did Josh Sawyer say about Pillars of Eternity 3?
In a Gamepressure interview published June 13, 2025, Obsidian designer Josh Sawyer was asked about the possibility of another Pillars of Eternity. He said he would like a third game to use the mechanics of Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire while expanding how players interact with the environment.

“I think that a third game should be an isometric 3D with an environment more like Baldur’s Gate 3; it would work,” Sawyer said.
What would “like Baldur’s Gate 3” mean?
Sawyer was talking about the environment and spatial presentation, not proposing a copy of Baldur’s Gate 3. He described retaining an isometric view while using a more fully 3D space that could make height and environmental interactions more meaningful. His wording does not suggest a shift to a conventional over-the-shoulder or first-person camera.

He also spelled out the kinds of systems he would want: “I think, at some point, I would like to see a game that used all those Deadfire mechanics, plus more environmental mechanics, elevation hazards, and dynamic terrain stuff.” That points to a sequel building on Deadfire rather than abandoning its mechanics, while giving terrain a larger role in encounters.
Is Pillars of Eternity 3 in development?
The interview does not confirm that Pillars of Eternity 3 has been greenlit or entered production. Sawyer answered in terms of what he would like to see if a third game were made. The interview provides no production timeline, release date, platform plan, budget, or publisher commitment.
