Mupen64Plus is a modular Nintendo 64 emulator for Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, and Windows. A complete setup needs more than the emulator core: it also needs graphics, audio, input, and RSP plugins, plus a front end. The project’s home page announces version 2.6.0, but installation details depend on the package and platform you use.
What is Mupen64Plus?
Mupen64Plus is a cross-platform, plugin-based N64 emulator derived from the Mupen64 project. The project describes it as “capable of accurately playing many games”; that is the project’s own description, not a guarantee that every game will run correctly on every computer. Mupen64Plus project
The project lists Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and Windows, and dynamic recompilers for Intel x86/amd64 and ARM CPUs. These are project-level platform and CPU listings, not assurances that the same package or setup process is available for every system.
What do you need for a working setup?
The core by itself is not a complete, ready-to-use emulator installation. The project’s core repository says a functioning setup also requires graphics, sound, input, and RSP plugins, as well as a front end. Mupen64Plus core repository

The repository’s current README lists SDL 2, libpng, FreeType 2, and zlib as binary package requirements. Building from source adds compiler, make, and development-package requirements. Those details can differ by release and operating system. The project wiki cautions that its README may describe unreleased code; for a released build, follow the instructions included with that specific package. Mupen64Plus wiki
- Choose a Mupen64Plus package for your operating system.
- Read the instructions shipped with that release before installing dependencies or running commands.
- Check that the installation includes or provides the core, required plugins, and a front end; installing the core alone is insufficient.

How do saves and fast-forward work?
The core repository documents F5 to save a state, F7 to load a state, and holding F to run at 250% speed. It also lists commands for reset, pause, screenshots, audio, and frame advance. The commands can be configured in the user configuration file, so defaults may not match a customized setup. Mupen64Plus core repository

How do you configure a keyboard or controller?
The SDL input plugin provides default keyboard mappings and can auto-configure recognized joysticks. If the defaults do not suit your controller, the project’s controller guide covers editing mapping entries and identifying joystick button, axis, and hat numbers. A USB N64 controller adapter is one possible way to use N64-style hardware with a computer, but the project documentation does not validate any particular adapter model, operating-system compatibility, or performance. Check that your computer recognizes the adapter as a joystick, then configure the resulting inputs in the SDL plugin.

Will your games run smoothly?
Do not treat the emulator’s availability or the project’s general compatibility description as a promise of smooth playback for a particular game. Check the project’s game compatibility notes and plugin parameters when diagnosing a title-specific issue; graphics settings and the particular game can matter.
