Monster Hunter: World is Steam Deck Verified, and Steam says its default graphics configuration performs well on the handheld. Start with the defaults, then tune to your preference: a 40 FPS cap is a balanced starting point, while 30 FPS is the more conservative choice for steadier play and battery focus. Neither setting guarantees a locked frame rate in demanding hunts.
Does Monster Hunter: World run well on Steam Deck?
Steam announced that Monster Hunter: World – Iceborne became Steam Deck Verified with update Ver. 15.20 on October 19, 2023. Its announcement says, “The game’s default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck.” That makes the in-game defaults a sensible baseline—not a promise that every area will hold a particular frame rate. Read Steam’s announcement.
Verification means the game met Steam’s stated criteria, including the default graphics configuration performing well. It does not mean every scene is locked to a specific FPS or that the defaults suit every player’s preferences.
Best balanced settings to try first
The following is a published third-party recommendation, not a tested or guaranteed optimum. Begin at the game’s default graphics configuration, then use this as a tuning baseline if you want to adjust it.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
| Setting | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1280×800, when available | Preserves the Deck’s full display resolution. 1280×720 is a lower-pixel alternative if you need to ease the load. |
| SteamOS refresh rate and frame limit | 40 Hz and 40 FPS | A middle ground between the more conservative 30 FPS target and a higher frame-rate attempt. |
| Steam Deck TDP limit | 11–12W | Suggested by TechBloat for its balanced profile; it is not a verified optimum. |
| Volumetric rendering | Off or low | A suggested first reduction among demanding effects. |
| Shadows and ambient occlusion | Lower than default | Reduce these before cutting texture quality, if you need more headroom. |
| Screen-space reflections and foliage sway | Off | Suggested reductions for the balanced profile. |
| Texture quality | Medium or higher, if memory headroom allows | Retains more surface detail than an across-the-board low preset. |
These settings come from TechBloat’s Steam Deck guide. It notes that busy scenes and hunts can still dip, so check the result in gameplay rather than treating the target as a guarantee.
Choose a profile for your priority
There is no single agreed best settings combination. Two third-party guides recommend different resolution and frame-rate targets, so treat them as alternative starting directions rather than results from a shared benchmark.

- International (UK) Version
- 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
- SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
- 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
- 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
| Priority | Published starting direction | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced handheld play | 1280×800, 40 Hz/40 FPS, moderate settings; reduce volumetrics and shadows first | More image detail than a sharply reduced resolution, but demanding hunts can still dip. |
| Consistency and battery focus | Try a 30 FPS cap, lower costly effects, and consider a lower TDP | Motion is less fluid than at 40 FPS. No universal battery duration is established. |
| Aggressive frame-rate attempt | Game Voyagers proposes 980×600, 12W, 45 FPS, and low graphics | Lower image quality; this differs from TechBloat’s recommendation and is not independent verification. |
The 980×600 profile is from Game Voyagers. Avoid combining the two guides’ recommendations into a purported tested optimum. A 60 FPS lock is not a safe expectation based on these guides: TechBloat describes it as more realistic in lighter scenes than in demanding hunts.
How to tune settings without guessing
- Start with the defaults. Steam says the game’s default graphics configuration performs well on Deck, making it a useful point of comparison.
- Pick one target. Try 40 Hz/40 FPS for a balanced starting point, or 30 FPS if steadiness and battery focus matter more than fluidity.
- Reduce effects in a group. If performance is uneven, lower volumetric rendering, shadows, and ambient occlusion; disable screen-space reflections and foliage sway before sacrificing texture detail.
- Check a demanding quest. A quiet hub may not show how the game behaves during a busy hunt. Change one group at a time and compare frame pacing, clarity, and stability in a demanding scene.
- Restart after graphics changes. Capcom says most graphical setting changes require a game restart to take effect. See its Steam troubleshooting guide.

Performance is uneven during hunts
Try the 30 FPS target, then lower the costly effects described above. If you are using 1280×800, 1280×720 is another resolution to try. Evaluate each change in a demanding quest rather than assuming a hub scene represents the whole game.
The game crashes or has launch or cutscene problems
TechBloat suggests trying Proton Experimental for crashes or launch and cutscene problems. That is third-party advice, not official Capcom Steam Deck guidance. If the game launches and behaves normally, there is no need to change compatibility tools just to apply a settings guide.

Does installing on a microSD card improve performance?
A fast UHS-I microSD card is an optional way to store the game if removable storage suits your setup; TechBloat prefers the internal SSD when available. Storage choice is not a graphics setting or an FPS fix, so do not buy a card expecting higher frame rates.
