Find Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates in Bastion Remnant chests, or get two guaranteed by locating a Treasure Room Bastion. To duplicate one, use a crafting table with the template, seven diamonds, and one block of its associated material; the recipe consumes the original and produces two templates.
Where to find a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
Explore Bastion Remnants in the Nether and search their chests. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20 release notes list the Netherite Upgrade among templates found in Bastion Remnant chests. The notes do not provide an exact chance for ordinary chests, so there is no supported percentage to rely on.
Treasure Room Bastion: two guaranteed templates
A Treasure Room Bastion Remnant is the dependable option: Mojang states that every one contains two Smithing Templates. This guarantee is also documented in the Bedrock Trails & Tales 1.20 notes. The guarantee applies to Treasure Room Bastions, not every Bastion Remnant or every chest.
| Location | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Ordinary Bastion Remnant chests | Templates may appear; an exact current chance is not stated in Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20 release notes. |
| Treasure Room Bastion Remnant | Two Smithing Templates guaranteed, according to Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20 and Bedrock Trails & Tales 1.20 notes. |
How to duplicate the template
- Open a crafting table.
- Place one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, seven diamonds, and one block of the material associated with the template in the recipe.
- Take the two resulting templates. The original is consumed as an ingredient, so the net result is one additional template.
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20 release notes describe the duplication recipe as requiring seven diamonds, one template, and one block of that template’s material, yielding two templates. The release-note wording does not name the specific block for this template, so check the current in-game recipe book for the item-specific ingredient rather than assuming a material from an unofficial recipe list.

Why make a copy before upgrading gear?
Smithing Templates are consumed when used in smithing upgrades, as stated in Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20 release notes. Duplication therefore lets you keep using the Netherite Upgrade pattern on additional items without having to find another template for every upgrade.
What the historical loot-rate change means
Mojang’s Java Edition 23w05a snapshot notes said Netherite Upgrade templates had been made “twice as common.” That is a historical relative adjustment, not a current probability table; it does not establish the exact chance in a non-Treasure Room chest.
