A January 15, 2013 preview said Minecraft: Pocket Edition 0.5.1 was in development and forecast gravity-affected sand and gravel, slabs, stairs, and new clouds, with arrival expected in late January or possibly early February. A later Minecraft Forum notice, dated January 30, documented version 0.6.0 as live and listed several of those features. The two posts describe different version numbers; neither explains the change.

What the January 15 preview forecast for 0.5.1

Minecraft Forum’s January 15, 2013 article, “Pocket Edition – What’s on the Horizon,” described an update then in development. It forecast slabs, stairs, new clouds, and gravity affecting sand and gravel. The post relayed a tweet by Jens Bergensten about the blocks; Pocket Gamer separately reported Bergensten’s wording as “sand and gravel will soon feel the effects of gravity.” The contemporary preview estimated the update might arrive in late January or possibly early February. These were forecasts, not a complete confirmed changelog.

Pocket Gamer’s January 15 preview also attributed “new fancy sky rendering” to Johan Bernhardsson, while saying its report drew on Mojang developers’ Twitter feeds. The underlying social posts are not independently verified here, so these phrases are best understood as wording reported by Pocket Gamer.

What the later 0.6.0 notice documented

On January 30, 2013, Minecraft Forum published “Pocket Edition 0.6.0 Released!” and said version 0.6.0 was live. Its feature list included signs, sky and clouds, and sand and gravel affected by gravity. It noted that cloud appearance varied between fast and slow devices.

The same release list also named armor, baby animals, an improved D-pad, new blocks, stairs and slabs, and other tweaks. Those features belong to the documented 0.6.0 release notice; the notice should not be recast as proof that they shipped in 0.5.1. The reviewed posts do not explain why the January 15 preview used “0.5.1” while the January 30 release notice named “0.6.0.”

Record What it says Status
January 15 preview Gravity-affected sand and gravel, slabs, stairs, and new clouds; late January or early February expected Forecast for the then-upcoming 0.5.1 update
January 30 notice Signs, sky and clouds, gravity-affected sand and gravel, plus other listed features Documented as live in version 0.6.0

The 0.6.0 notice said distribution could take a few hours depending on regional availability and directed players to iTunes or the Android app store. That is a historical rollout detail, not current purchase or download guidance.

Why caves were not expected soon

The January 15 preview said caves were not coming soon because of performance issues on handheld devices, but it did not rule them out permanently. Sacheverell’s article put it this way: “So what of certain land generation features, like caves? They aren’t coming any time soon, unfortunately, primarily owing to performance issues on handheld devices.” The qualification matters: this was a near-term expectation tied to performance concerns, not a declaration that caves would never be added.

What the sales figure represents

The January 15 Minecraft Forum article reported that Pocket Edition had passed 5 million sales in December. The article does not identify the original publisher of that figure, so it should be attributed to the contemporary report rather than presented as an independently verified Mojang statistic.
