Path of Exile 2 Monk Guide: Starting Skills and Ascendancies

The Path of Exile 2 Monk starts as a Dexterity/Intelligence class with Falling Thunder and a Wrapped Quarterstaff. Compare its three ascendancies by mechanics, not an unsupported power ranking.

The Monk is a Dexterity/Intelligence class that begins with a Wrapped Quarterstaff and Falling Thunder. Patch-0.5.5-referenced game data lists three ascendancies: Martial Artist, Invoker and Acolyte of Chayula. Their broad mechanical themes can help narrow a choice, but the available information does not establish a strongest option or a complete current build; check node and skill descriptions in the game client before committing.

What does the Monk start with in Path of Exile 2?

ExileDB’s class data, labeled as checked against patch 0.5.5 and read from game files, lists the Monk’s level-one attributes as 7 Strength, 11 Dexterity and 11 Intelligence. It also lists a Wrapped Quarterstaff and Falling Thunder as starting equipment and skill. See the Monk class data.

The quarterstaff is part of the in-game starting setup, not a recommendation to buy a physical weapon. ExileDB lists 22 skills that require a quarterstaff, but a weapon requirement for a particular skill is not the same as a rule that every Monk build must use one. Check the intended gem’s weapon requirement in the game UI before planning around it.

What is the Monk’s general playstyle?

Guides commonly associate the Monk with quarterstaff attacks, elemental effects, combos and charges. Mobalytics’ overview, updated September 22, 2026, names skills including Falling Thunder, Killing Palm, Glacial Cascade, Frozen Locus, Wind Blast, Staggering Palm, Tempest Bell, Ice Strike, Tempest Flurry and Vaulting Impact. These examples illustrate the breadth of the class’s skill family; they are not a verified leveling sequence or a promise that every setup is equally viable in the current patch. See the Mobalytics Monk overview.

Use the class’s elemental and quarterstaff emphasis as a starting point, not a restriction to one attack or damage type. Specific gem eligibility, weapon rules and behavior belong to the gem description and current game client.

Which Monk ascendancy should you choose?

The patch-0.5.5-referenced class data lists Martial Artist, Invoker and Acolyte of Chayula. The available descriptions suggest different mechanical directions, but they do not provide a measured ranking of damage, speed, difficulty or overall strength.

Ascendancy Broad direction in the available descriptions What to check before choosing
Martial Artist Combo-linked mechanics; one node transforms equipped glove base types and explicit modifiers. Whether the combo loop and glove transformation support the attacks and equipment you want. The inspected database examples are described in the Martial Artist node reference.
Invoker Associated with elemental effects. Read the current node descriptions and confirm how they interact with your chosen skills. The available sources do not establish a complete Invoker build or power ranking.
Acolyte of Chayula Associated with chaos-oriented systems. Check the current node text and the resource and defensive mechanics your setup actually uses. The available sources do not establish a complete Acolyte build or power ranking.

Choose by the play loop you want rather than a supposed universal winner. Compare the ascendancy’s mechanics and resource engine with your intended skills, defensive model and tolerance for setup. These are useful decision axes, not a tested performance comparison; a guide scoped to patch 0.5.4 discusses similar selection considerations in its class and ascendancy selection guide.

Is the Monk a good class for a new player?

The available sources do not measure class difficulty or establish whether Monk is easier or harder than other classes. A more useful self-check is whether you enjoy its attacks and are comfortable learning the resource and setup loop of the skills and ascendancy you choose. If you are unsure, read the skill and node descriptions in the current client and avoid treating a guide’s patch-specific recommendation as timeless.

How current are Monk guides and build advice?

Game balance and mechanics change between patches. ExileDB labels its class data as checked against patch 0.5.5, and PoE2 Database’s Martial Artist page is dated September 27, 2026 and identifies patch 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites. Those are useful mechanics references, not developer-authored build recommendations. Verify exact node wording in the live client.

Grinding Gear Games’ official Early Access Patch Notes for Content Update 0.4.0 document earlier changes, including a change to base unarmed attack time from 1.4 to 1.65 attacks per second. That figure is historical evidence of patch volatility, not a current 0.5.5 value or a Monk recommendation. Old screenshots and build claims should be checked against the patch they describe.

No verified patch-0.5.5 leveling route, support-gem order, passive tree, gear progression, bossing setup or endgame build is established by these references. Treat detailed build plans and balance-sensitive recommendations as provisional unless their authors identify a current patch and the client confirms the relevant mechanics.
