Treat 2024 recommendations as guidance for that balance period, not as a guaranteed current meta or a single setup that is best for PvE & PvP.
What the Great Axe does in each mode
| Mode | Great Axe role | Example pairing | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| PvP | Damage and crowd control; can serve a bruiser or dive role, depending on the build. | War Hammer for a bruiser setup; lighter dive builds may use other weapons. | Armor weight, survivability, control, damage, and whether you are playing wars or smaller encounters. |
| PvE | Area damage and crowd control against groups, with potential contribution against single targets. | Hatchet for a DPS example: Great Axe controls groups while Hatchet focuses enemies and bosses. | Group control, area damage, single-target contribution, and what the second weapon adds. |
These are role-based examples, not a universal ranking. The Icy Veins PvP guide describes Great Axe and War Hammer as a common medium- or light-armor bruiser pairing and notes that lighter dive builds can pair Great Axe with other weapons. It places bruisers among roles seen in 50v50 wars; that is a guide’s overview, not a guarantee about every group or the current meta. Icy Veins PvP guide
PvP: choose the pairing around your job
Bruiser in large-scale fights
War Hammer is the cited guide’s example partner when the goal is a bruiser role. Think about how the two weapons support your team’s damage and crowd control, and choose armor weight with survivability and mobility in mind. Do not assume medium or light is automatically right for every war roster or player.
Lighter dive builds and smaller encounters
A lighter build may use Great Axe as part of a dive role, with a different second weapon. The source does not establish one best alternate pairing, attribute split, armor setup, or perk list for every smaller PvP encounter. Select for the job you need to perform rather than copying a bruiser setup unchanged.

Hatchet and Great Axe as a DPS example
Icy Veins presents Hatchet plus Great Axe as one DPS pairing: use the Great Axe to control groups and the Hatchet to focus enemies and bosses. This division of labor makes the pairing most relevant when an encounter mixes packs with higher-priority targets; it is an example, not evidence that it is optimal for every PvE activity. Icy Veins PvE guide
Assess the encounter before choosing
- For groups, weigh the Great Axe’s area damage and crowd-control contribution.
- For bosses or other single targets, consider how much the second weapon contributes when the Great Axe is not controlling a pack.
- Match the pairing to your group’s needs instead of expecting one setup to excel equally at both jobs.
Why exact 2024 build details need a patch date
New World has adjusted weapon perks, and official update notes say some weapon balance changes are tuned separately for PvE and PvP. In the Rise of the Angry Earth notes, the Great Axe’s Refreshing Charge values were reduced from 5%…34%…67% to 3%…20%…40%. Those values describe that update, not necessarily the current perk. Summer Medleyfaire notes also document Great Axe perk changes, including Crippling Reap’s duration moving from 2 seconds to 4 seconds and Maelstrom’s weaken duration from 4 seconds to 8 seconds. These are dated change records, not a current perk recommendation. Check in-game descriptions and the relevant patch information before committing to a perk or respec. Summer Medleyfaire notes

Great Axe artifacts: dated mechanics, not a build prescription
Official Season of the Guardian notes list Tempest Fury as a Great Axe artifact. In those notes, Momentum grants 3% movement speed for 3 seconds per successful attack, stacking up to 10 times, while Endless Spin lets Whirlwind continue without hitting targets, up to 12 spins. These figures describe the mechanics in that release’s notes; they do not establish present-day item availability, current behavior, or that the artifact is best for a particular mode. What a build guide can—and cannot—settle
The cited material supports broad roles and example weapon pairings, but it does not establish one definitive skill-point allocation, attribute split, complete gear set, or current optimal loadout for both modes. Treat any exact setup as version-specific: verify skill and perk descriptions in game, then make separate choices for the activity you actually play. A PvE group-control setup and a PvP bruiser or dive setup have different jobs, so copying one between them without adjustment can leave a key role unsupported.
