Start with the fundamentals below; you do not need a perfectly optimized Monstie to make progress through the story.
How do battles work?
Combat revolves around three attack types: Power, Speed, and Technical. In a direct clash, choosing the type that counters the opponent’s attack gives you the advantage. Watch the targeting line and use what you know about the enemy’s likely action to choose both your attack and the Monstie best suited to the moment. The game’s official Steam listing describes this tactical system; iMore’s beginner guide offers practical advice on matching attack types.
Coordinate with your Monstie
When you and your Monstie target the same enemy and use the winning attack type, you may trigger a Double Attack. iMore’s guide describes these as a way to deal substantial damage and prevent the enemy’s attack. Treat this as a tactical opportunity, not a guaranteed result in every battle state.
Build the Kinship Gauge through battle
Successful battle interactions build the Kinship Gauge, which is part of the combat loop identified in the official game listing. Pay attention to the choices that help you control a clash rather than selecting attacks without regard to the target or matchup.

How should you choose Monsties?
There is no single “best” Monstie for every beginner or route. Choose a party that suits the enemy and terrain you expect to face. Capcom’s Monstipedia provides categories useful for comparing Monsties, including stats, elemental attack and defense, strongest attack type, growth, Riding Actions, habitat, Kinship Skill, and genes.
- For battles: Compare attack type, elemental strengths and defenses, growth, and Kinship Skill.
- For getting around: Check Riding Actions and habitat; a useful field ability can matter as much as a combat advantage on a particular route.
- For customization: Review a Monstie’s genes and consider which abilities or combinations could complement its role.
Use these traits to assemble a party with useful coverage instead of trying to maximize every stat on one Monstie. You can consult the in-game Monstipedia to inspect a hatched Monstie’s details.

How do you collect eggs safely?
Eggs are found in nests inside Monster Dens. Pick one up and carry it out of the den to keep it. While you carry an egg, you move more slowly; physically contacting a monster during your escape can start a battle, and losing that battle means losing the egg.
- Look for a nest inside a Monster Den. Pick up an egg and pay attention to the comments about its weight and smell.
- Choose whether to keep looking. If eggs remain in the nest, you can exchange your selection. But lingering gives a monster time to awaken or return.
- Leave the den with the egg. Avoid contact with monsters on the way out. If a monster retreats to its den after a battle, following it there guarantees an egg, according to Capcom’s official manual.
Weight and smell are clues, not guarantees. Capcom says heavier eggs are more likely to contain a strong monster, while a stronger smell is more likely to indicate rare genes. Neither cue promises a specific Monstie or gene.

What do genes do, and how much should you optimize?
The Rite of Channeling transfers a gene from one Monstie to another, allowing you to add abilities and experiment with combinations. The game listing describes this as a customization mechanic, while Capcom’s Book of Genes lists gene details such as size, element, attack type, effects, Kinship Gauge cost, and which monsters possess each gene.
Use gene details to make a Monstie more useful for your needs, but do not turn every new egg into a demand for a perfect layout. The sources establish gene transfer and customization; they do not establish that rare genes or advanced layouts are necessary to finish the story.

How should you prepare weapons and armor?
The game has six weapon types, and equipment can be forged to suit different play styles. Rather than relying on one weapon for every encounter, maintain varied coverage and check enemy vulnerabilities. When preparing, compare the weapon types you can use, the monster’s weaknesses, armor defenses, and the materials you have available to improve equipment. The official game listing confirms the weapon variety and forging; iMore’s beginner guide also recommends learning which weapon types work well against monsters.
