What changed in Nintendo Switch update 20.0.0?
The April 30, 2025 update introduced three headline features: Virtual Game Cards for digital software, GameShare for sharing compatible games in a session, and System Transfer to move data to Nintendo Switch 2. The features are not interchangeable: Virtual Game Cards manage access to purchases, GameShare is a limited play-sharing feature, and System Transfer migrates console data.
How Virtual Game Cards work
Nintendo represents purchased digital games and downloadable content, along with some free software, as Virtual Game Cards. A card can be loaded or ejected between up to two linked Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. When loaded, it can be played offline and by any user on that console. Nintendo also allows a card to be lent to members of the owner’s Nintendo Account family group. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Cards guide.

- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Moving a Virtual Game Card does not move its save data. Nintendo says the save remains on the console where it was created, so card access and save-data migration must be treated as separate tasks. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Cards support information.
Virtual Game Card or online license?
Online License Settings provide a separate way to launch digital purchases without loading their Virtual Game Cards. The distinction matters if you share a console or expect to play offline.
| Access method | Internet requirement | Who can play | Console use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loaded Virtual Game Card | Can be played offline once loaded. | Any user on the console with the card loaded. | Cards can be loaded or ejected between up to two linked consoles. The same game cannot run simultaneously on multiple consoles through this method. |
| Online license | Internet connection required when opening the software. | Users linked to the Nintendo Account that purchased the software. | The same game cannot run simultaneously on multiple consoles through this method. |
These differences are documented in Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card and online-license support guide.

Does GameShare work with all games?
No. GameShare is restricted to compatible games, and a Nintendo Switch 2 system must start the share. Nintendo’s support documentation states: “GameShare must be initiated by a Nintendo Switch 2 system.” An original Switch can receive an eligible share through local communication, but it cannot host one; two original Switch systems cannot GameShare with each other. This is not unrestricted access to another person’s digital library. Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ.

Can Virtual Game Cards move or be lent between Switch and Switch 2?
Yes, for Nintendo Switch games: Virtual Game Cards can be loaded between console generations, and eligible cards can be lent to family-group members. Switch 2-exclusive games cannot be lent to an original Nintendo Switch, which cannot run those titles. Consult Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card guidance for the applicable game and console rules.

How to transfer a Nintendo Switch to Switch 2
System Transfer was added under System Settings in version 20.0.0. Nintendo describes two routes: local communication when both consoles are available, and a server-based route when the owner does not yet have Switch 2. Both require internet access and verification with the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s Switch 2 system-transfer instructions.
| Transfer route | When it fits | Effect on original Switch |
|---|---|---|
| Local communication | Both the original Switch and Switch 2 are available for the transfer. | Nintendo recommends this route if you intend to keep using the original Switch. |
| Server upload | You do not yet have Switch 2 and need to upload transfer data for later completion. | Uploading the data initializes the original Switch. Nintendo warns to use this route only if you can complete the transfer on Switch 2. |
The server path is therefore not simply a backup that leaves the old console ready for continued play. If keeping the original Switch in service matters, wait until both consoles are on hand and use local communication. Follow Nintendo’s current transfer instructions before starting, especially if the original console contains data you still need.
What happens to a non-Express microSD card?
Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for ongoing storage. A standard, non-Express microSD card used in the original Switch cannot be used as Switch 2 storage. Nintendo does describe a temporary import process for screenshots and videos from an original Switch card; that does not make the card suitable for continued storage in Switch 2. See Nintendo’s transfer and microSD information.
Quick Recap
Which feature should you use?
- Use a Virtual Game Card when you want the loaded software available offline or playable by other users on the console. Remember that saves stay on their original console.
- Use an online license when you want to open a digital purchase without loading its card and can meet the internet and account-link requirements.
- Use GameShare for a compatible title when a Switch 2 can initiate the share; an original Switch can only receive certain shares locally.
- Use local System Transfer when both systems are available and you want to keep using the original Switch. Use server upload only when you can finish the transfer on Switch 2, because the upload initializes the old console.
