The First Descendant is a free-to-play, third-person co-op looter shooter built around fast gunfights, character abilities, loot, and four-player boss battles. GamesBeat’s hands-on preview captured a pre-release Xbox demo in June 2024—not the game as it plays today. Its account is still a useful snapshot of the action, but later updates and Nexon’s own comments give a more complicated picture of the game’s staying power.
What kind of game is The First Descendant?
Nexon Games describes The First Descendant as a third-person co-op action RPG looter shooter made with Unreal Engine 5. Players choose Descendants with different combat styles, take on missions, collect gear, and build up characters and weapons. The game’s larger encounters include cooperative fights against Colossi, designed for teams of up to four. Nexon Games’ official game page outlines its character and co-op focus.

In GamesBeat’s demo, the moment-to-moment loop was direct: shoot enemies, gather dropped loot, manage ammunition, use a grappling hook to move through the environment, and push through a mission in Kingston. That mix of shooting and progression is the source of the preview’s “furious” action—not evidence of current balance or how rewarding the full game is over time.
What the 2024 hands-on preview experienced
GamesBeat’s Dean Takahashi reported playing for nearly an hour at Summer Game Fest Play Days on Xbox. He said the demo “kept me in a state of non-stop action” and described it as polished. He played solo, however, so his account does not demonstrate how well the game’s co-op works in a group. Read the original GamesBeat hands-on preview as a report on that specific pre-release build.

The preview also listed 11 weapon classes, 560 modules, and 16 dungeons as launch-era content. Those are historical figures reported in 2024, not verified current totals. They help convey the scale the game was aiming for at launch, but should not be used to describe its present content catalogue.
Is The First Descendant free, and does it require online play?
The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 base game as free and says online play is required. It supports up to four online players, and in-game purchases are optional. PlayStation also lists purchasable Caliber virtual-currency add-ons. In practical terms, you can try the base game without paying for it, but the game is an online experience and offers paid items. See the PlayStation game page for its platform-specific listing.

What features are specific to PS5?
PlayStation documents DualSense vibration and trigger effects for the PS5 version, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, as well as 3D audio. These are PS5-specific features in PlayStation’s listing; the cited information does not establish that PC or Xbox versions offer the same controller or audio features. A DualSense controller is an optional accessory, not a requirement to play.
Is the game still being updated?
Yes. Nexon’s official notices show that The First Descendant was still receiving updates shortly before October 8, 2026. The company’s August 20, 2026 notice for Update 1.4.0 says Season 4 Episode 1 added a new main story and lists Steam, Xbox, and PS5. Its news page also lists Patch 1.4.4 on October 1 and Hotfix 1.4.4b on October 2. These notices establish recent update activity, but do not by themselves establish future support plans, player population, or update quality. Check Nexon’s official news and update notices for the published details.

What has Nexon said about the game’s staying power?
Update activity is not the same as sustained player interest. In an April 2, 2026 report, PC Gamer quoted Nexon CEO Junghun Lee describing the game as having had a “Strong launch, no staying power.” Lee said retention problems required structural changes, adding: “These are design issues that are not fixed with a patch.” This is an executive assessment reported by PC Gamer, not a published, quantified retention study. PC Gamer’s report provides the context.
GamesRadar’s April 3, 2026 report covered a “Completing the Game” roadmap discussion and quoted community manager Jason acknowledging player frustrations about content, endgame balance, and the learning curve. Those comments indicate the issues Nexon publicly recognized; they do not independently measure how the game has changed since the roadmap. GamesRadar’s roadmap coverage recounts that discussion.

Who should try The First Descendant?
- Consider trying it if you want a free-to-start, online shooter with character abilities, loot-driven growth, missions, and cooperative boss fights.
- Go in with measured expectations if you are looking for a long-term game with proven retention or a settled endgame. Nexon’s 2026 comments raise concerns about staying power, and recent patches alone do not answer those questions.
- Choose based on your setup rather than assumed performance differences: the available sources do not establish a PC-versus-console performance ranking or current player-population comparison.
The original preview’s enthusiasm belongs to a short, pre-release demo. For a current decision, treat that as a description of the game’s action and movement—not a verdict on today’s progression, balance, or community.
