Then cast during play from the Quickbar or radial menu. Bards and sorcerers use known spells and skip the preparation step.
Prepare spells if your class requires it
Wizards, clerics, druids, paladins, and rangers prepare spells. Use the spellbook or spell-preparation panel, then:
- Select the spellcasting class.
- Select the spell level.
- Choose a spell and put it in an open prepared slot. The original manual describes clicking the arrow beside a spell or dragging its icon into a slot.
- When you have filled the slots you want, choose Rest. Prepared spells become ready after resting.
If your character has more than one spellcasting class, select each class in turn and prepare its spells separately. The available spells and slots depend on that character’s class and level.
Cast a spell during play
Preparation does not cast the spell; it makes the spell available for use. To activate one, either put it on the Quickbar for direct access or choose it through the radial menu.

- Quickbar: Drag a spell icon onto an available Quickbar slot, then activate it when you want to cast.
- Radial menu: Right-click an empty Quickbar slot to open the radial menu and select a spell.
The Quickbar is convenient for spells you use often; the radial menu lets you select one when needed. Neither method is universally better—the choice depends on how you prefer to access spells and how much Quickbar space you have.
If you play a bard or sorcerer
Bards and sorcerers do not use the preparation-and-rest sequence described above. They cast from spells they know. Use the Quickbar or radial menu to access a known spell during play.

Version and controls
These instructions describe the original PC-style NWN1 interface. The game dates to 2002, and Beamdog released Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition in 2018. The included legacy manuals may be outdated or inaccurate, so exact controls and interface details may differ by edition, platform, or custom module. The steps here do not establish a universal console or handheld control sequence.
