NetherRealm had chosen and begun work on its next game years before Ed Boon discussed it publicly—but the studio boss did not reveal what the game is. In May 2026, he separately said NetherRealm was pursuing another Mortal Kombat game. That confirms the franchise is in development at the studio, not that it is the specific next release.
What did Ed Boon say about NetherRealm’s next game?
In a September 2024 interview reported by ComicBook.com, Boon said NetherRealm had known what its next game would be “three years ago” and had been working on it “in some capacity ever since.” He described planning, research and preparation beginning before the current game is finished, rather than waiting until a release to decide what comes next.

His remarks indicate the project had been selected around 2021, by his estimate. They do not name the game, confirm its franchise, or provide a release date. ComicBook.com reported that Boon offered no further details.
Is NetherRealm’s next game Mortal Kombat or Injustice 3?
The May 2026 update gives a clearer picture of the studio’s projects, but still does not identify which one is next. Asked whether NetherRealm was working on a new Mortal Kombat or Injustice 3, Boon told VGC: “But we’re definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we’re definitely doing more, as well, so there are a lot of pots on the stove – not just with games, though, with other forms of media and whatnot. So we’ve got a lot of great announcements that are coming.”

VGC’s May 6, 2026 report said the status of Injustice 3 remained unknown. Boon’s statement confirms NetherRealm is pursuing another Mortal Kombat, but does not establish that it is the project he described in 2024 or the studio’s next release. Nintendo Life also reported the May 2026 comments.
