What the FCC Filing Revealed About Nintendo Switch 2—and What’s Confirmed Now

Filing coverage identified Wi-Fi 6, NFC in the right Joy-Con 2 and possible top-port charging. Nintendo’s specifications for the released Switch 2 confirm those features.

FCC filing coverage pointed to three Switch 2 capabilities: Wi-Fi 6, NFC in the right Joy-Con 2, and a top USB-C port that could also charge the console. Nintendo’s specifications for the released system now confirm all three. The filing coverage was an early look at hardware details, not a complete product announcement.

What the FCC filing coverage reported

In January 2025, a technical examination of certification materials for product code BEE-001 described 802.11ax wireless support on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. That is Wi-Fi 6, not Wi-Fi 6E: Wi-Fi 6E adds operation in the 6 GHz band. The examination did not identify 6 GHz or Wi-Fi 7 operation. The technical examination of the filing supplied those band-specific details; Nintendo’s specification now confirms Wi-Fi 6 without detailing the bands.

March 2025 reports on the FCC materials described NFC/RFID capability in the right Joy-Con and inferred that the top USB-C port might support charging as well as accessories. These were interpretations of regulatory material reported by secondary outlets, rather than feature announcements from Nintendo. Nintendo’s current specifications settle both points. The filing-era NFC and USB-C reporting provides the discovery context.

What Nintendo confirms on the retail Switch 2

NFC March 2025 reporting said FCC material indicated NFC/RFID capability in the right Joy-Con. Filing-era report Bluetooth and NFC are listed for the right Joy-Con 2. Nintendo technical specifications
Top USB-C port March 2025 reporting suggested the top port could charge the console; this was an inference from the filing material. What the features mean for players

Wi-Fi 6 is confirmed; Wi-Fi 6E is not

The key distinction is the frequency band: the filing examination described 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, while Wi-Fi 6E adds 6 GHz. The reported material did not show 6 GHz support, and Nintendo’s published specification names Wi-Fi 6. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the console as Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 based on these sources.

NFC is in the right Joy-Con 2

Nintendo specifies NFC on the right Joy-Con 2, matching the filing-era reports. The specification identifies that controller specifically; it does not support a broader claim that both Joy-Con 2 controllers have NFC.

The top USB-C port can charge or connect accessories

The top port is not limited to accessories: Nintendo says it can also charge the console. The bottom port remains the connection used for charging and docking. Nintendo’s specifications establish these functions, but do not imply that the two ports have identical roles.

One practical hardware detail: game storage

Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal UFS storage and a microSD Express slot compatible with cards up to 2 TB. A standard microSD card does not expand Switch 2 game storage; Nintendo says those cards can only be used to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch. For extra game capacity, the relevant compatibility requirement is microSD Express, not merely microSD. Nintendo’s specifications describe the supported storage.

What an FCC filing does—and does not—tell you

Nintendo publishes FCC Part 15 information for Switch 2 and related equipment, but the regulatory page is general compliance context, not the source of the specific BEE-001 feature interpretations. Nintendo’s wireless regulatory information provides that broader context. An FCC filing can expose technical or compliance details; it should not be treated as a comprehensive feature list or a substitute for the manufacturer’s product specifications.
