Arrowhead said its December 2, 2025 public technical beta reduced Helldivers 2’s PC installation from approximately 154GB to approximately 23GB—about 131GB, or 85%. At the time, Steam players could try the smaller build by selecting the prod_slim beta branch. Those directions describe the beta as it was announced in 2025; the available sources do not establish whether the branch remains available or has since become the default, so check Steam’s current branch options before switching.
How to opt into the Helldivers 2 slim beta on Steam
These are the opt-in instructions published with the update on December 2, 2025. Branch names and availability can change, so confirm that prod_slim appears in Steam before proceeding.
- Open your Steam Library and right-click HELLDIVERS 2.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Betas tab.
- Under Beta Participation, select
prod_slim. - Allow Steam to download and install the slim patch.
Arrowhead’s announcement also listed prod_legacy as the option to return to the larger build if serious problems arose. Whether either branch is available now is not established by the 2025 instructions.
What the 131GB reduction means
Arrowhead’s December 2, 2025 figures were approximate: the PC installation went from about 154GB to about 23GB, a reduction of about 131GB (roughly 85%). These are the studio’s reported beta-build figures, not a guarantee that every later build or Steam download will have exactly those sizes. Arrowhead Game Studios credited development partner Nixxes for the complete data deduplication behind the change.

The reason for the old duplication was storage performance. In an October 3, 2025 technical explanation, Arrowhead said PC assets had been duplicated to keep related data close together on mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs). On a spinning disk, that arrangement can reduce the distance the read head has to move. The studio said the technique is largely unnecessary on solid-state drives (SSDs), which have no moving parts and virtually no seek time. Removing redundant copies therefore made the PC installation much smaller without changing the game’s functions, according to Arrowhead.
What Arrowhead said about performance and compatibility
Arrowhead said it had completed internal quality assurance and that its beta testing found no functional differences between the slim and legacy builds apart from installation size. For the small percentage of players still using mechanical HDDs, the studio reported that mission loading took only a few seconds longer in the worst cases. That is Arrowhead’s account of its testing, not an independent benchmark, and the statement specifically concerns HDD users.

In its October 2025 post, Arrowhead estimated that about 12% of PC gamers used HDDs, but called that estimate highly unreliable and based on extrapolations. It was not a measurement of Helldivers 2 players, so it should not be treated as one.

The available reporting confirms that prod_slim was offered as a public technical beta on December 2, 2025. It does not establish the branch’s status as of October 8, 2026, or whether the slim build later became the standard PC version. Check the Betas tab in the game’s Steam Properties for the current options; if prod_slim is absent, the historical opt-in instructions no longer apply.
