A New Nintendo 3DS plays the wider Nintendo 3DS game library, but a smaller group of games requires New Nintendo 3DS-family hardware. The clearest verified example is Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. That distinction matters when choosing a game card: “works on New Nintendo 3DS” does not necessarily mean “requires New Nintendo 3DS.”
What counts as a New Nintendo 3DS game?
The phrase can mean either a game playable on a New Nintendo 3DS or a game that will not run on an original Nintendo 3DS-family system. Most 3DS games fall into the first, broader category. Only some require a New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, or New Nintendo 2DS XL.
Nintendo’s support guidance says software designed exclusively for New Nintendo 3DS-family systems cannot be used on older systems. Its example is Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. Nintendo Support explains the New Nintendo 3DS software compatibility message.
A verified game that requires New Nintendo 3DS
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is a role-playing game specifically released for New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL. Nintendo UK describes it as “only for New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL.” It is therefore a concrete example of a New-model requirement, not simply a game with extra features on newer hardware. See Nintendo UK’s game information for Xenoblade Chronicles 3D.

Games that work on older 3DS systems, with New-model enhancements
Some games support all Nintendo 3DS systems but make use of added New Nintendo 3DS functionality. Nintendo’s 2015 announcement named The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate as playable across Nintendo 3DS systems, while noting added functionality on New Nintendo 3DS models. Those enhancements do not make either game New-model-exclusive. Nintendo’s New Nintendo 3DS XL launch announcement gives these examples.

Can a New Nintendo 3DS play DS and DSi games?
Yes. The New Nintendo 3DS XL manual says the system can use Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo DSi Game Cards. DS and DSi software displays in 2D rather than 3D. There is an important exception: DS or DSi software that needs an accessory inserted into the Game Pak slot on a DS or DS Lite cannot be played on New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL.
- Nintendo 3DS cards: Supported, including games that may have New-model-only requirements.
- DS and DSi cards: Supported in general; they display in 2D.
- DS or DSi games requiring a DS/DS Lite Game Pak-slot accessory: Not supported on New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL.
Nintendo’s New Nintendo 3DS XL operations manual covers game-card use, and Nintendo UK explains the DS and DSi compatibility exception.

What to check when buying a New 3DS game
- Confirm the required system. If the listing is for a New-model-only game such as Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, an original Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS will not run it.
- Check the region and format. Verify that the listing’s region and physical or digital format suit your system and how you intend to play. Do not assume a listing is compatible based only on “3DS” in its title.
- Read the condition and contents carefully. For a used game card, inspect the seller’s condition description and confirm what is included; current condition and stock depend on the individual listing.
- Verify accessory needs for older games. A DS or DSi card that requires a DS/DS Lite Game Pak-slot accessory is an exception to the system’s general DS/DSi compatibility.
Nintendo says manufacturing of the 3DS family has ended. That does not establish whether a particular game card is in stock or what it should cost: availability and condition must be checked with the seller. Nintendo UK’s discontinuation notice addresses the end of system manufacturing.

No. Nintendo’s guidance says New Nintendo 3DS cover plates do not fit New Nintendo 3DS XL. Cover plates are an option for the smaller New Nintendo 3DS only; check the exact model before buying an accessory. Nintendo UK confirms the cover-plate compatibility distinction.
