Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is a story-driven action RPG set in the Game of Thrones universe. Developed by Netmarble Neo and published by Netmarble, it lets players create a hero, visit locations including Winterfell and King’s Landing, and follow a new story. Steam lists single-player and online co-op features. The game entered Steam Early Access on March 26, 2025, before its full release on May 21, 2025. Is Game of Thrones: Kingsroad free to play?
Yes. Netmarble said Kingsroad would be free to play at official launch, and Steam classifies it as free to play while listing in-app purchases. That means there is no upfront game price listed, but optional purchases are part of the business model. Netmarble’s launch announcement and Steam Support’s listing confirm those details.
Why did players criticize it at launch?
Notebookcheck’s May 22, 2025 launch-era coverage described a mixed response: some players liked the atmosphere, soundtrack, responsive block-and-dodge combat, quests, and amount of content, while others objected to monetization and progression. The complaints below are player reports recorded at launch, not a verified description of the current build. Notebookcheck’s report attributed them to player feedback and cited SteamDB figures.

Monetization and progression
Reported concerns included energy mechanics, multiple premium currencies, paid dungeon access, and a progression slowdown some players perceived as a paywall after roughly 30 hours. That last figure describes player reports in the May 2025 coverage; it is not a guaranteed point at which every player would be blocked.
Co-op and other design complaints
The same coverage said co-op was limited to instanced boss fights rather than shared open-world exploration. Players also criticized graphics they considered dated, limited character customization, NPCs that looked too similar, and midgame difficulty spikes. These are launch-era criticisms, not confirmed assessments of subsequent updates.

What the launch review figure does—and does not—show
Notebookcheck reported that SteamDB showed 63% positive among more than 1,100 Steam reviews in May 2025. This is a dated snapshot reported by a secondary source, not a current Steam rating. Notebookcheck also attributed a launch-day concurrent-player peak above 3,100 to SteamDB. Neither figure establishes the game’s present reception or activity level, and the available reporting does not establish whether later updates addressed the reported concerns.
Can your PC run Kingsroad?

Is Kingsroad worth trying?
The answer depends on what you want from a Game of Thrones RPG. The free-to-play entry point makes it possible to try without buying the game first, while the listed in-app purchases mean “free” does not mean monetization-free. If shared open-world co-op is essential, note that launch-era coverage described a narrower, boss-focused co-op setup. The May 2025 complaints and review snapshot can help set expectations, but they cannot tell you whether the current version has changed; the available sources do not establish its present reception or the status of those issues.
