It may look enormous in the trailer, but official materials do not give its map size or verify that it is larger than any other Pokémon game map.
What the trailer establishes about Lumiose City
The setting is not simply a stop on a journey across a wider region: the story takes place in Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan aims to make the city a place for both people and Pokémon. The Pokémon Company describes the redevelopment plan as the premise of the story.
Nintendo says this version of Lumiose is transforming, with the city changing between day and night. Compared with its appearance in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, released in 2013, the city has more greenery and facilities that feel newer, according to Nintendo’s description of the setting.
Is Lumiose City actually massive?
“Massive” is a fair description of the impression the trailer can give, but it is not a published measurement. The official sources available here provide no map area, dimensions, or measured comparison with Lumiose in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y—or with another Pokémon map. That means the scale should be treated as visual, not as a confirmed claim about explorable area.
#1 Best Overall
- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
What you do in the city
Lumiose’s redevelopment provides the setting for the Z-A Royale, a tournament where Trainers rank up through real-time Pokémon battles, some of which can feature Mega Evolutions. Nintendo of America’s official Nintendo Direct description introduces the tournament and battle format.
The city-focused premise connects the setting to the game’s central activity: exploring a place in transition while taking part in battles and the Royale. The official description establishes those broad elements, but does not quantify how much of the city players can explore.
