Yes. Reported Switch 2 specifications show substantially lower GPU clock speed and memory bandwidth in handheld mode than when docked: 561 MHz versus 1007 MHz for the GPU, and 68 GB/s versus 102 GB/s for bandwidth. The CPU clock is higher handheld, however, and these hardware figures do not mean every game will run a fixed percentage slower or look worse. The figures are attributed to Digital Foundry and reported by Ars Technica in May 2025, rather than listed in Nintendo’s public specification table.
How large is the reported docked-to-handheld gap?
The reported GPU clock in handheld mode is about 56% of the docked clock, while handheld memory bandwidth is about two-thirds of the docked figure. Those percentages are arithmetic comparisons of the reported operating points—not measured performance scores. The CPU clock moves in the opposite direction, running higher in handheld mode.

These are Digital Foundry figures reported by Ars Technica in 2025; Nintendo Life also reported the figures. Ars cautions that TFLOPs are not a straightforward way to compare real gaming performance across devices. Its reported specification table also lists 12 GB of memory total, with 3 GB reserved for the system.
What the figures do—and do not—say about games
Lower handheld GPU clock and memory bandwidth indicate a meaningful difference in the hardware operating points available in the two modes. They do not translate directly into a universal frame-rate reduction, resolution change, or visual-quality penalty. A game’s results depend on its code, resolution and frame-rate targets, graphics settings, and upscaling. Nintendo likewise says that improvements vary by software on its Switch 2 features page.

The available figures establish the clock and bandwidth gap, but do not establish an official Nintendo explanation for each operating point or a controlled, multi-game comparison of the same releases in both modes. The dock’s active fan, by itself, does not prove the cause of the differences.
What Nintendo officially lists for display output
Nintendo’s public technical specifications identify a custom-made NVIDIA processor. They list TV output up to 4K at 60 fps and 1080p or 1440p at up to 120 fps. In handheld and tabletop modes, maximum resolution follows the built-in 1920 × 1080 display. These are output capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular game renders at those resolutions or frame rates.

Nintendo lists VRR up to 120 Hz in its technical specifications. Its current features page says TV-mode VRR support was added in a system update released September 10, 2026. Using it depends on a supported game and compatible display; reports written before that update may describe an older state of support.

A September 4, 2026 summary of Digital Foundry’s analysis of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition reports dynamic resolution at 1080p docked and handheld, with resolution falling as low as 432p. It also describes reduced foliage, shadows, and screen-space reflections in handheld mode, where frame-rate dips to 25 FPS were more common. This is an example of one game’s implementation, not a benchmark for other Switch 2 titles. See NintendoEverything’s summary of the analysis.

What to take away when choosing a play mode
- Docked mode has the higher reported GPU clock and memory bandwidth; handheld mode has the higher reported CPU clock.
- Those hardware differences are not a fixed percentage loss in frame rate or image quality across games.
- TV output supports resolutions and refresh rates beyond the handheld screen’s 1080p maximum, but each game determines its actual rendering and performance.
- For a specific title, its own mode-by-mode analysis is more informative than applying the console-wide clock ratios to expected gameplay.
