My Original Half-Life 2 Review from 2004/2005: Revisiting the Original Xbox Port

Paul Thurrott’s “My Original Half-Life 2 Review from 2004/2005” is a retrospective published on 24 October 2018, not a new review. It revisits his earlier PC coverage and adds a distinct account of playing the original Xbox version: a strikingly complete single-player port, with more loading and occasional slowdowns than he experienced on PC.

What Thurrott’s retrospective covers

Thurrott explains that the review material was written in parts in 2004 and 2005, then revisited in his 2018 article after The Orange Box received an Xbox One Enhanced release. The article’s first section draws largely on his late-2004 PC review; the later section is specifically about Half-Life 2 on the original Xbox. His sweeping praise—including calling it the best game ever—is his judgment as a reviewer, not an objective rating.

Half-Life 2 follows Gordon Freeman in City 17, a city under the control of the Combine. Thurrott’s account emphasizes how the game’s environments and physics shape play: players manipulate objects, solve environmental puzzles, and use the gravity gun, alongside vehicle sequences. These design elements are part of the PC-focused overview; the Xbox section considers how the experience translated to that console.

What changed in the original Xbox version

Thurrott says the original Xbox release contained the full single-player experience on one disc. He describes its graphics as reduced compared with a high-end PC, and reports more frequent loading screens, though they were quick in his experience. He also noticed occasional slowdowns. These are his observations of the Xbox edition, not results from a controlled comparison.

#1 Best Overall
Half Life 2 - Xbox
  • Amazing new graphics with pre-rendered cutscenes that look like they came from the movies
  • More realistic physics - Objects have varied and appropriate mass, density and physical properties
  • Incredibly advanced AI as enemies adapt, plan, improvise, and respond
  • Hordes of new aliens and other enemies, plus a plethora of new guns and weapons
Area Original Xbox, as Thurrott describes it PC context in the retrospective
Visuals Lower graphical quality than a high-end PC. Thurrott uses a high-end PC as the comparison point; he does not provide a standardized graphics measurement.
Loading and performance More frequent but quick loading screens, with occasional slowdowns. He reports fewer such compromises on PC; no timed test or benchmark is given.
Text and captions He found text clear on standard-definition televisions and says the game was fully captioned. The article does not give a corresponding PC text-legibility comparison.
Online play and related content The original Xbox version lacked online play and other PC content. The article does not itemize every PC feature omitted from the Xbox release.
Controls The article discusses the Xbox edition but does not establish a detailed control-by-control comparison. No detailed comparison is stated.

Xbox 360 backward compatibility: one reported problem

Thurrott says he tried the original Xbox game on Xbox 360 and encountered a serious problem in Water Hazard: the level became unplayable for him. He says the same level worked on original Xbox. This is an account of his particular attempt, not a guarantee about every Xbox 360 console, software update, or setup.

How contemporary reviews rated the PC release

PC Gamer’s 2024 republication identifies Jim Rossignol as the author of the UK review published in November 2004. It reports separate scores for the UK and US magazine editions; these are historical review scores, not current ratings or audience survey results.

Edition Reported score Attribution
PC Gamer UK 96% Jim Rossignol’s November 2004 review, as reported in PC Gamer’s 2024 republication.
PC Gamer US 98% Separate US magazine review score, as reported in the same 2024 republication.

Rossignol’s original UK review called the game “a magnificent, dramatic experience that has few peers” and concluded, “This is the one unmissable game.” Both quotations are attributed to him through PC Gamer’s 2024 republication.

Where to check the current PC edition

Valve’s Steam listing dates Half-Life 2 to 16 November 2004 and currently says the PC offering includes Episodes One and Two. That listing describes the PC product, not the original Xbox disc Thurrott discusses; storefront details can change. See Half-Life 2 on Steam.
