Reviewers praised the feel and presentation of the hockey itself. Metacritic’s PS4 review excerpts include IGN’s 84/100 assessment, which described the on-ice presentation as dynamic and fluid. Other sampled reviews characterized NHL 17 as a strong or excellent hockey game.
The main reservation was its value as an annual sequel. Some critics questioned whether it moved far enough beyond NHL 16 to warrant buying another yearly release. EA Vancouver developed NHL 17, which EA Sports released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016. EA announced a North American release date of September 13, 2016, and a worldwide date of September 15, 2016. Its launch features included:

- A new Franchise Mode with owner and arena management.
- Net Battles, along with updated goaltending and collision physics.
- Expanded customization options.

Is NHL 17 worth playing today?
It can make sense if you specifically want NHL 17’s version of the series, its 2016-era teams and presentation, or a physical copy for a collection. The reviews support the quality of the core hockey and variety of modes, while the sequel-to-sequel criticism matters most if you are choosing between it and a newer installment.

The PlayStation Store listing describes online and offline play and up to four players, and notes that a newer release exists in the series. Those listing details do not establish present-day server operation. If you are buying it for an online mode, verify that the mode and services you need are currently working before purchasing.

EA’s launch announcement confirms retail availability at the time; it does not establish today’s stock, price, or condition.
