If NHL 25 freezes, crashes at launch, or closes to the Xbox dashboard on a Series X or Series S, work through these eight checks in order and test the game after each one. They are Xbox troubleshooting recommendations from EA, not guaranteed NHL 25-specific fixes. EA links to its general crashing and freezing guidance from the NHL 25 support hub.
Try these eight checks in order
Start with the quicker, reversible checks. If NHL 25 still crashes after a step, continue to the next one. EA’s article groups game and console updates together as installing the latest software; they are separated here into two checks.
1. Check for an NHL 25 update
Use the Xbox interface to check whether an update for NHL 25 is available, then install it before testing the game again.
2. Check for an Xbox system update
Check the console for an available system software update and install it. EA’s general guidance does not specify a menu path for the current Series X|S interface.

3. Disconnect attached USB devices
Unplug USB devices attached to the console, then launch NHL 25 and see whether the crash persists. If there is no change, reconnect them after the test.
4. Restart the Xbox
Try an ordinary console restart. This is a basic check to attempt before the more involved steps below.

5. Power cycle the console
Power-cycle the Xbox using the current instructions for your console. EA links to Xbox power-cycle guidance; follow that guidance rather than relying on a button sequence that may not match your setup.
6. Reinstall NHL 25
Uninstall and reinstall the game, then test it again. If NHL 25 is on an external drive, EA suggests trying the internal drive as a diagnostic test. This does not mean you need to buy storage.

7. Clear the alternate MAC address
EA’s listed path is Xbox dashboard → Settings → All Settings → Network → Network Settings → Advanced Settings → Alternate MAC address → Clear, followed by a restart. The article includes legacy menu wording, so labels may differ on current Series consoles.
8. Delete local saved data
EA includes deleting local saved data among its troubleshooting steps and links to Xbox guidance. Before doing this, check the current Xbox instructions so you understand the effect and any cloud-sync implications. EA’s article does not explain those details.

What EA has documented specifically for NHL 25
EA’s first NHL 25 patch blog, published October 3, 2024, said Patch 1.1.0 was scheduled to go live October 4 at 4 a.m. ET, with up to one hour of expected downtime after deployment. The notes document two specific World of CHEL crash fixes:
- “Fixed an issue where users opening a message banner would crash entering World of CHEL.”
- “Fixed an issue where a user would crash when quitting Ones Eliminator and then reenter into World of CHEL.”
Those notes describe narrow historical bugs, not all NHL 25 crashes or a current diagnosis for Xbox Series X|S. The EA SPORTS NHL 25 Patch Blog 1 does not establish the full later patch history or current known-issue status.

If NHL 25 still crashes
If the crash continues after these checks, EA advises contacting its customer support team through the NHL 25 support hub. Include what the game was doing when it closed, whether it happens consistently, and which troubleshooting steps you tried. Public reports, such as a forum post titled “NHL 25 keeps crashing on series x,” are user accounts rather than confirmed diagnoses: EA Forums report.
Platform note
Microsoft’s listing identifies NHL 25 as playable and optimized for Xbox Series X|S. That confirms the supported platform, but does not identify the cause of a crash.
