If NHL 24 crashes on Xbox Series X|S, there is no confirmed universal cause or guaranteed fix. Start by identifying whether the game closes to the dashboard, freezes, disconnects online, or shuts down the whole console. Then try an Xbox power cycle and check where the game and its updates are stored. EA’s NHL 24 support page links to separate help for crashes and connection problems.
Identify what is happening before troubleshooting
“Crashing” can describe different problems, and the distinction helps determine which support route fits. Record the game mode, when the problem occurs, any error message or code, and whether other games behave the same way.
- Game closes to the dashboard: NHL 24 exits, but the Xbox remains on.
- Game freezes or shows a black screen: Note whether it recovers, stays stuck, or eventually returns to the dashboard.
- Online disconnection: The session ends or disconnects while the game remains open. This may call for connection troubleshooting rather than crash troubleshooting.
- Console shuts down: The Xbox itself powers off, which is different from NHL 24 closing.
EA lists crash/freezing help separately from connection help on its NHL 24 support page. Two player reports on the EA forums document individual Series X crash experiences, but anecdotes do not establish how common the problem is or what causes it for other players.
Try these troubleshooting steps
1. Fully power-cycle the Xbox
An EA forum support post recommends holding the console’s front Xbox button for about 10 seconds, until it shuts down. Unplug the power cable for 10 seconds, reconnect it, and start the console. The post says this process does not erase games or data.

2. Check the game’s storage location
If you use an external drive, EA forum support advises saving NHL 24 and its updates to the same drive. If the game is on external storage, the post suggests reinstalling it to the Xbox’s internal drive. Treat this as a step worth trying when the storage setup matches—not as a proven explanation or a fix for every crash.
3. Follow EA’s crash guidance for consoles
EA’s general crashing, freezing, and loading troubleshooting includes platform-specific steps, such as closing background apps. Use the guidance for consoles; instructions written for PC do not apply to an Xbox.

What EA has confirmed about NHL 24 crash fixes
EA’s NHL 24 Patch 1.5.0 notes said the patch was scheduled for March 5, 2024, at 12 PM ET. One listed fix addressed a crash triggered by selecting “view in creation zone” after purchasing a special character bundle from the World of Chel store. That is a fix for one specific action, not evidence of a general fix for current Xbox crashes or problems in other modes.
