Need a nudge before the reveal? Connections #241, published February 7, 2024, groups its 16 words around sea creatures, two-dimensional shapes, boxing maneuvers, and phrases that follow “Fancy.” Hints come first; the complete groupings are below a spoiler warning.

Hints for Connections #241

Try to find four words that share one specific connection. The game uses a 16-word board divided into four groups of four, with the categories arranged from easier to trickier. If you spot a pair or trio, test whether a fourth word fits—and whether any other words make the connection less convincing.

  1. Gentle nudge: One group belongs in the ocean.
  2. Stronger hint: Look for familiar flat figures, then for actions a boxer might use.
  3. Closest hint: The last group completes the same word: “Fancy ___.”

Connections #241 answers

Spoilers below. The published answer guide lists these four categories and their words.

  • SEA CREATURES: CRAB, RAY, SPONGE, SQUID
  • BASIC TWO-DIMENSIONAL SHAPES: CIRCLE, DIAMOND, SQUARE, TRIANGLE
  • BOXING MANEUVERS: BOB, CROSS, HOOK, WEAVE
  • FANCY ___: FEAST, FREE, PANTS, THAT

Why the “Fancy” group is easy to miss

The final set works through phrase completion: Fancy Feast, fancy-free, fancy pants, and “fancy that.” Several board words also invite other associations, so a tempting connection is not necessarily the intended category. For example, SPONGE and SQUARE/PANTS can evoke SpongeBob, but that is not one of the four published groupings for this puzzle.

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four that share a theme, a format described by Graham Todd, Tim Merino, Sam Earle, and Julian Togelius in their paper on the puzzle: “Missed Connections: Lateral Thinking Puzzles for Large Language Models”. The answer guide for this date is from Try Hard Guides.
