NORCO earned a strong critical reception for its evocative writing, distinctive South Louisiana setting, and atmospheric storytelling. Metacritic’s displayed snapshot lists an 89/100 critic score from 22 reviews, though reviewers also flag prose that can be difficult to parse and, in one PS5 review, cursor and interface friction.

What is NORCO?

NORCO is a single-player, dialogue-focused point-and-click narrative adventure developed by Geography of Robots and published by Raw Fury. It launched on March 24, 2022. You search for Blake, the protagonist’s missing brother, after their mother dies, following a fugitive security android through refineries, strip malls, and drainage ditches near suburban New Orleans. Steam describes the setting as a distorted South Louisiana of sinking suburbs and industrial swamps, and says the story is fictional despite drawing inspiration from real-world themes.

The missing-person search opens into a wider, multigenerational mystery about memory, technology, nature, salvation, corporate power, and local history. Painterly cinematic pixel art, environmental field recordings, and a post-industrial electronic score establish the game’s unsettled mood; Steam credits the sound design and field recordings to fmAura and the score to Gewgawly I.

What do critics think of NORCO?

Metacritic’s displayed 2022 release-era critic snapshot gives NORCO an 89/100 Metascore from 22 critic reviews, labeled “Generally Favorable.” In that same sample, 21 reviews are positive, one is mixed, and none are negative. This is an aggregator snapshot, not a guarantee that every critic—or every player—will respond the same way. Metacritic’s page also displays a separate 7.4/10 user score from 119 user ratings; that figure is user-generated and should not be confused with the critic score.

#1 Best Overall
NORCO - PlayStation 5
  • Unravel a mystery in a world haunted by the past and threatened by the future. What starts as a straightforward search for your missing brother quickly spirals into a multigenerational mystery. The lines between salvation, memory, technology, and nature bleed together into a uniquely compelling, contemplative narrative rooted in Southern literature, pulp fiction, and point & click adventure games both classic and contemporary.
  • Explore alongside sharply drawn characters with deep roots, rich backstories, and complex motives. A chaotic bayou pirate, bar-stool private detective, escaped security android, and your stuffed childhood monkey will all offer assistance in an eroding and uncertain world.
  • Solve puzzles, fight your way past corporate security goons, and infiltrate an influencer cult squatting an abandoned mall on the outskirts of New Orleans.
  • English, French (France), German, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Spanish in-game text

The reviewed excerpts most often emphasize the writing, atmosphere, unusual setting, and narrative ambition. Checkpoint Gaming’s Metacritic-hosted excerpt calls it “a must-play for anyone interested in story-driven games,” even for people who do not usually enjoy point-and-click adventures. That recommendation reflects the game’s appeal as a narrative experience more than a claim that its mechanics will suit every adventure-game fan.

Is NORCO hard to follow?

It can be. The game’s ornate prose and growing web of mysteries are part of its identity, but they may make some passages less immediately clear. The Guardian’s Metacritic-hosted excerpt says “the writing here occasionally sacrifices clarity for floridity.” That is a specific critical reservation, not evidence that all players will find the story confusing.

The story also does not resolve every mystery or thread to every reviewer’s satisfaction. If you prefer tightly explained plots and clear answers to each narrative question, the ambiguity and density may frustrate you. If you enjoy literary, mood-led storytelling that leaves room for interpretation, those same qualities may be a draw.

How does the interface feel on different platforms?

Availability and input are practical considerations for a point-and-click game. The PS5 review excerpt from Push Square specifically criticizes cursor resets, interaction targeting, and accidental dialogue repetition. It is one reviewer’s platform-specific observation, not a verified issue across all editions. Push Square’s excerpt describes that interface concern as its reservation before calling the game a “rich, fulfilling experience.”
